Get Self Storage When You Can

The key to getting it right the first time is to be patient and wait for the perfect deal. Now, you cannot sit back and wait for the perfect deal if you are in a hurry to get a space. Just make sure that you do not wait until the very last minute to start looking for a space. This is not the way to go. If you ask any property manger, they will always tell you if you know you need self storage, always reserve something sooner than later. You can never know if the storage space you need will be available.
You do not want to start the search too early, either. The best time to look for a space would be with about two to three weeks left before you need it. Typically the property manager that you talk to will be able to hold on to a self storage space for that long. They of course will want some type of commitment from you like a down payment, prepayment or holding the space with a credit card. The main point here is to ensure that you go ahead and get a storage space when you can because you want to ensure that one will be available. The worst thing to think about is not having a self storage unit when you when need it.

New Credit Card Tech On Its Way To Protect Customers

From PCI to EMV, keeping up with the acronyms around credit card processing and protection can be a challenge in and of itself. Regardless of what self-storage operators choose to adopt at the front desk, one outcome is clear— those who stay current on technological advances will enjoy a security net to protect their customers’ credit card data and transactions. In contrast, businesses that go on the cheap with lesser protections may jeopardize customers’ futures, as well as their own.

Customers will increasingly expect up-to-date compliance from the companies with which they do business. Analogous to the “show me the Carfax” report you might request when seeking a used car’s accident history, consumers may demand ironclad assurances that their payment data is safe, so their cards are protected from fraudulent charges. From credit cards with high-security EMV chips to a future of wireless payments using NFC, changes are coming.

According to Bruce Speegle, senior account manager for the SG-Associates LLC credit card processing firm, “Our society wants the newest and greatest product. Present-day [payment] terminals are not set up to take new EMV microchip cards [that are] already popular in Europe, and coming in force this year to the US. Once the [credit card] industry says something is obsolete, it’s obsolete.”

So, as these modernizations unveil themselves, fast consumer adoption to new cards is likely to follow. Self-storage owners must be ready to move forward at the same pace, acquiring new technology as needed in the process.

A white paper from First Data entitled, “What Data Thieves Don’t Want You to Know: The Facts About Encryption and Tokenization,” identifies some of the issues currently facing merchants. “Payment security is complex, with risks and vulnerabilities at every point of the processing chain. The combination of increasingly burdensome compliance costs and constantly emerging new data security threats make it essential for merchants to implement effective risk management technologies, [which can] limit costs and avoid the disastrous consequences of data compromise.”

I Finally Bought Myself A Boat, Now Where Do I Store It In The Winter?

Boats sure look funny with ice frozen half way up their hulls, and Daddy’s “had to have it”, new $20,000 toy sure will make a great lawn ornament once the ravages of winter take a hold of it.  These days, as our economy continues its’ slow ascent back to the glory days, people have begun to loosen up their strangle hold on their money, and have started purchasing items they’ve always wanted.  With all these new bright and shiny toys, comes a little problem, where am I supposed to store this thing in the winter?

We all love being out on the water with the wind blowing through our hair, the warm sun shining on our faces, and the laughter of our families echoing across the lake.  As the sun shine and warm weather of summer gives way to the dreary, cold, overcast days of winter, many of us are faced with a decision that can very well determine the upcoming fun in the sun of next summer.  Where am I going to store my boat for the next 6 months.  An all too familiar question for boaters, boat storage is as important to the life of your boat as remembering to put oil into your motor.  While there are many answers to this question, there is one answer that’s clearly better than the rest, Self Storage Facilities.

As the winter months approach, you will begin to notice that many of your local storage facilities will be advertising that they have boat storage available.  Some facilities offer an array of different options when it comes to storing your new prized possession, so finding the right one can be a little challenging.  Depending on what your individual storage needs are, finding the right facility can seem daunting.

When it comes down to it, we all want the same basic things when it comes to storing our boats.  We all want a good value, security, and convenience.  While some people decided to go the route of having their local marina store it for them, there are a few items that may make storing your boat with a marina the GREATER of two evils.

First and foremost, we all want to get a good deal.  On average, your local marina may charge you anywhere from $600 to $900, depending on your boat size, for a “seasonal” non-boating season rental.  For those of you that live to be out on the water, you know that the non-boating season typically lasts about 5, of what seems like the longest, months of the year.  If you were to break down the average rental price down by the month, you’d be paying an average of $150, or so, per month.  Depending on which storage facility you choose, you can be looking at a possible savings of $50 a month.  That translates to $250 that stays in your pocket, or a few extra tanks of gas to help get you around out there on the lake.

A side note to the cost, most marinas charge different rates based on the season.  Many of us don’t take into account what we are going to do with the empty trailer that we’ll have to find a place for while our are boats in the water.  A marina will charge you a completely different, and much higher, rate during boating season to keep that same parking space for your trailer.  A self storage facility charges you the same rate, year round, no matter the season.

As if the average savings on an individual storage space wasn’t enough,  the protection you’ll get for your boat is almost priceless.  Next time you’re out, drive by your local marina take a look at what measures, if any, that they’ve put in place to assure your boat is protected.  Did you notice the security cameras?  Wait, perhaps your marina doesn’t have security cameras, does it? Well, we do.

Security cameras are great, but if that was the only thing we offered, it still wouldn’t be enough.  .  Another added security measure that we have in place is controlled access.  Anytime the main entrance gate is closed, many of our locations are accessible only by entering a pin number, into an access keypad.  This pin keeps a record of who opened the gate, based on the personal pin number used, and what time they accessed the facility.  If that doesn’t help you feel little more at ease about where your boat is stored, then not much else will.

Now at this point, we’ll have to assume you’re starting to see the benefits of storing with a self storage facility, but we’ve got one more advantage to help “set the hook”.  In an age of cell phones, mobile internet, banking, shopping and every other luxury we have to make our lives easier, convenience is king.

As far as your boat is concerned, few things are as convenient and hassle free as storing your boat with a self storage facility.  If you think about everything you have to do in regards to your boat, from washing it, to maintaining it, to repairs, towing, registering it (we all love a fun filled trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles), and everything else, what could be easier than parking it and forgetting about it until the spring?  All of our locations offer automatic payment options, which means you won’t even have to cut a check and put it in the mail every month, or ever phone in a payment.  Convenient is an understatement.

After all of this information about why storing your boat with a storage facility is a much better choice than keeping it at your local marina, its’ clear what the answer to that question we mentioned earlier, “Where am I supposed to keep this thing in the winter?” is.  I hope that after your take a look at and consider all of the facts, you’ll decide to keep your boat safe and secure at your local neighborhood Storage Station.

Mobile Devices and The Future of Self Storage

Mobile Devices and Self Storage

When you look at your iPhone, BlackBerry or Android phone, the idea of self storage doesn’t immediately pop into your head. But that’ s OK, because soon it will. We check our Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social networking profiles from the convenience of our mobile devices. We play Angry Birds, find out which movie is playing and whether the weather is going to be nice enough for us to go to the beach. We live almost every aspect of our daily lives through these devices so why not take things just a step further use them to make our lives even that much easier when we want to locate storage?

Insiders in the self storage industry will agree that the next frontier for self storage will be the ease with which customers can access their storage units when they are on the go. We at USSelfStorageLocator.com pride ourselves in constantly innovating and providing our customers with features that our competitors lack.

Currently self storage mobile apps are virtually non-existent. One or two exist that provide information on a particular storage company’ s services. However, there is not a comprehensive app that allows you to search for storage, rent units and pay for them. This is where we come in. We won’ t give away all the details just yet. But, what we can tell you is that you can soon look forward to carrying around the excellent and convenient services that you find on our website right in your pocket.

A Look at Laminate

A non-green product that still has some environmental certifications

Q. I am getting mixed advice about whether laminate flooring is durable. I also have been told that it contains plastics and glue and can be bad for indoor- air quality and the planet. What, if any, advantages are there to laminate floors and is there anything environmentally correct about them?

A. Many laminates are very dent- and scratch-resistant and offer incredible value. Also when doing remodeling work, laminates require less height restrictions, which helps maintain the look of baseboards and a smoother flow from room to room.

Laminates do contain melamine resin, which is widely used in other products too, including countertops, dry erase boards, dinnerware and cooking spoons.  Our store, Buddy’s Flooring America in Beavercreek, maintains scorecards that list health and environmental certifications for every product we carry – green or not.

For example, a customer who is considering  Inhaus – one of our most popular laminates – can see that the product complies with California Air Resource Board (CARB) standards for formaldehyde emissions. It does not, however, have a third-party indoor air quality certification in which emissions of other Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) have been measured to meet certain limits. Each scorecard book also contains a glossary of all the certifications so you can see what criteria have to be met in receiving certification.

Inhaus is a self-locking product so glue is not needed for installation.

As for planet-friendly benefits, the company says that more than 80 percent of the material in Inhaus is made of wood leftover from other processes such as sawmills, and the remainder comes from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) – certified forests.

The Inhaus products contain three layers of paper – a wear layer, a color printed layer and  base layer – which are impregnated with melamine resins to make them water resistant. The core of the product is a high density fiber board. This company’s warranties – ranging from 20 to 40 years – also speak to it being a durable product.

Inhaus offers an updated sophisticated line of laminates in many different styles including 8-inch wide board looks as well has the elongated tile looks that are so popular today. But all of those style choices and the attractive pricing levels – not environmental attributes — are what draw people to this product. ©

The Perfect Woodworking Ideas: Plans, Patterns and Projects

When you are looking for some woodworking ideas, it may come as no surprise to you that you can find a great many of them online. There are perhaps thousands of websites that cater to your need and you are certain to be able to find at least half a dozen instantly that can help you to come up with some great ideas. This website  is full of some great ideas and has anything from spice rack plans to indoor furniture and more. When you visit the site you will see that each category has a sub-category and once you find a topic that interests you, all you have to do is click on it and you will be given a full set of instructions that can help you to effectively make the TV stand that catches your eye or anyone of the hundreds of designs that appeal to you. These designs tell you exactly how much wood you need; the length depth and height of the pieces and of course the tools that you need to use as well while guiding your through every process until you have a finished article you can be proud of.

If you’re not looking to get some woodworking ideas online then perhaps you would like to buy a set of books that tells you what you can do and how you can go about it. ‘The new best of fine woodworking’ set of books that contains 6 volumes will show you how to create some small woodworking projects that also teach you how to design and build a large range of pieces, both modern and classic. The book is geared towards those who are not very experienced with woodworking, but it’s great too for those that are, and if it’s a simple project that you’re looking for, then you can find it here. Although this set of books is quite expensive and has been seen to sell for just under one thousand dollars, you can be sure that you will get a great deal of help and advice that will help and guide you every step of the way.

Woodworking plans don’t always cost money

You should be aware that not all woodworking plans have to cost a lot of money and as you can see from your search online, you can get a great many of them for free. Some of the free plans are pretty basic, and you may want to make a few changes to the designs and adapt them if you feel confident enough to do so. As with anything you want to buy, it’s worth shopping around, and you may be able to save yourself a few dollars per plan if you know where to look. Always make sure the plans are easy to read and you understand them, having a glimpse of a plan before you buy it can help you to determine this.

If you are not sure that a plan will work and you are not proficient enough to make the changes yourself yet, then perhaps you should move on to another project until you are sure you can confidently alter a plan that does not seem to add up correctly. Many plans that you can get online will be fine and drawn out and designed by knowledgeable people who are happy to let their designs ‘Go public’. It does always pay to know what you’re doing when you’re looking for some woodworking ideas, but if you only have basic woodworking skills then it’s probably wise that you start off with a set of plans that have been tailored to your level of experience.

Looking for woodworking patterns

When it comes to looking for some woodworking patterns, woodworkersworkshop.com is a great place to start, there is an extensive range of patterns and designs for you to choose from and many of them are written by people who have gone and made the outbuilding etc. themselves, which means you’re getting a design that can be made and great tips and advise on how to go about it. This is a great way to start if you are looking for some woodworking patterns and you’re not quite confident enough yet to follow some ‘plain’ instructions that don’t go into much detail. The only downsides to this website are that you’re spoilt for choice and you have to trust people who aren’t necessarily woodworking experts, but who are happy to show you what they’ve done and how they’ve done it.

The weekend woodworker’s project collection is a highly detailed book that is great for those of us who like to partake in a bit of woodcraft when we have the time. This book will teach you how to make all kinds of things using our favorite material, from shelving to storage and frames for mirrors and more, this is an excellent book that will guide you all the way.  Some of the plans do ask you to use specific pieces and components, which may not always be that easy, but they are always adaptable which gives you added flexibility.

Woodworkers blogs and forums

There are a lot of blogs and forums that might be able to help you should you have a problem with the plan you are working on, or any of the tools you are using. These forums and blogs can come in very useful and even though you may not always be able to get a reply right away, you are sure to get some help. Thanks to the internet, we now have access to a great deal of woodworking ideas, plans and more, this means if you have the time and the budget to get working on a project, it is very easy for you to start working on your ideas as soon as you can. There are many forums and blogs for you to choose from, you just need to find one that knows what it’s talking about and is frequently added to and updated, this way you can be sure that you will get a whole host of information about tools, plans and more, whenever you need it.

Free Up Some Garage Space

If your garage is beginning to overflow with clutter from boxes, yard tools, machinery and more, you need to start thinking about self storage down south in Walton. Renting a self storage unit can help you clear out all the extra clutter that prevents you from parking in your own garage. Many times, the garage becomes the place where all the extra stuff from the house, yard, and car ends up. The first thing you should do is go through all the clutter. There may be items in the garage that you would rather toss, sell, or donate. Anything leftover should go straight to your self storage unit in Walton. Here are some items that would be perfect for self storage.

  1. Pack away your seasonal items. Seasonal items such as winter gear like ski’s, snow boots, and sleds or your favorite summer toys like plastic pools, balls, and flotation devices are perfect for your self storage unit in Walton. Though there isn’t much snow in Walton Kentucky you may find yourself taking ski vacations and need a place to store all that winter gear you don’t want clogging up your home. You can use your self storage unit to put all that seasonal stuff and it is great for holiday decorations too!
  2. Perfect for motorized items. Motorcycles and dirt bikes are very popular in Walton, but they can be a huge pain when storing them at home! The garage gets easily cluttered, leaving little room for any other items that need space. Many times, the garage can get cluttered with motorized items other than the car. This includes motorbikes, lawn mowers and more. Save yourself time and space and use your self storage unit instead.
  3. Things you should never store. While a self storage unit is great for many garage items, there are some things that might be better suited for the garage. These include toxic items like paint thinner, chemicals, oil, grease, or anything flammable or explosive. Make sure you take care of those items properly and store them in the right way.

A How-to Guide For Promoting Your Self Storage Facility With LinkedIn.

LinkedIn for Self Storage

LinkedIn for Self Storage

LinkedIn, which surfaced nearly a decade ago, distinguishes itself in the social media arena by mainly targeting businesses and professional associations. Your self storage business will benefit from properly utilizing LinkedIn’s networking features which can help you get more business as well as connect with industry professionals. Our social media experts here at USSelfStorageLocator.com have prepared a short LinkedIn guide to help you get started on broadening your self storage facility’s online network and presence.

Basics of LinkedIn

To get started with LinkedIn you must first create a personal account. A Basic personal account is free and will let you create a personal profile for you, as well as a business profile for your self storage facility. However, LinkedIn offers various levels of paid memberships that give you access to extra features.

Once you create a personal account, fill it out with as much relevant information as possible. Your main focus should be informing potential self storage customers about your business. You can adjust your account settings by using the option in the upper right hand corner. For example, an important setting you can set up is whether or not you want others to see that you have viewed their profile. Enabling this setting will allow you to see who has visited your profile as well. This is very useful, as you could contact and research your profile viewers, and potentially generate leads. You can also use the account settings section to edit your profile details and manage your email notification preferences.

After completing your personal profile you will have to create a company page. Create it by visiting the Companies section and selecting ‘add a company’. You will need to fill in your company name and email address. You must prove that you are a current employee of the company by using your company email. Once you have done this, you will receive an email when your page is ready for editing. You can set up your company page so that other employees with a LinkedIn account can edit it.

Once you have set up both your personal profile and your company page, you can then start connecting with people. Remember that LinkedIn is used mostly by professionals so it is not encouraged that you add random people, which is a common practice on other social media networks. Before you can send an invitation to connect, you must first explain how you know the person. You will be presented with options such as colleague, classmate, friend, other etc. If you chose ‘other’, you will have to enter the person’s email address to send an invitation. A good way to get started is to search for people in the self storage industry such as vendors and self storage association officials. By doing so, you are aligning yourself and your business to those who could provide you with important industry information.

Business-to-business Interaction

In LinkedIn you can follow companies that have established a profile page. With this feature, you can follow local businesses and companies in your community and stay informed every time they update information on the site. Connecting with them may bring you more business leads, as many businesses need self storage services as well. You can also follow self storage companies similar to your own to get an idea of what they may be doing. Keeping up with your competition is an important part of potentially exceeding them.

Business-to-customer Interaction

The creation of a business page allows you to target potential self storage customers. This is a good way to increase the visibility of your self storage company. In your company page, you can list an overview of your facility details, current special offers, as well as any employment opportunities you might have. Ensure that you include as much quality information as you can – address, telephone, person of contact. You can include a picture of your facility or logo under the products and services section.

There is an Analytics feature that shows you how many people have viewed your page and the section with the most frequent visits. If you decide to execute a marketing/advertising promotion, this page is helpful for the evaluation of its success. For example, if four weeks into your promotion the number of visits to the promotional section has not increased at a satisfactory rate, then you can choose to improve upon what you are doing.

Lead Generation

As a self storage business owner, the primary purpose behind your use of LinkedIn will be to generate leads and create as much new business as possible. LinkedIn offers many features, but here’s a list of the features which could benefit your self storage business the most:

  • LinkedIn Answers – In this section, people ask questions about various topics to get advice. A quick search will show you the questions that people are asking concerning self storage. By providing helpful responses on a regular basis, you are likely to find potential customers.

  • LinkedIn Applications – You can add a link to your self storage blog, your Twitter account, Facebook account etc. This gives customers more access to your business by enabling them to connect with you on a variety of platforms. In order to connect your LinkedIn account to Facebook, you will have to allow access and permission from your Facebook account. You can visit the ‘My LinkedIn Profile’ page on Facebook and add the application to your Facebook profile.

  • LinkedIn Groups – You can join industry-related groups to connect with people in your field. However, you should join groups outside of your industry to connect with an even wider range of people. Try finding groups of businesses in your city or state.

  • LinkedIn People – Search for personal profiles using the box located in the upper right hand corner. When you find people you wish to connect with, you can ask your friends (if possible) for an introduction via LinkedIn. You can also search for people in specific companies to tailor your marketing efforts more precisely.

  • LinkedIn Direct Ads – This works in a similar way to the paid search results on Google. You create your advertisement and then bid on how much you will pay every time someone clicks on your ad. For example, if you pay $1 per click and it takes 25 clicks to convert a potential self storage customer, you would have spent $25 for one customer. If that customer rents a unit for 6 months at $60 per month, then a $25 investment which yields $360 would have been a smart choice.

  • LinkedIn Mobile – This is best utilized at trade shows or other industry events for making one-to-one contact. If you meet someone you want to connect with, you can transfer contact information via Bluetooth easily. This is a great way to follow up on a lead – no typing, no misspelled contact information.

Connecting Other Social Media Accounts

As mentioned earlier, you can choose to connect your Facebook account to LinkedIn. You can do the same for Twitter by using the “add application” feature. Your tweets will display in real-time on your LinkedIn account. This serves to add further visibility for your self storage business. You can also add polls, WordPress, Google Presentation, Huddle Workspaces, to name a few.

Marketing via LinkedIn

By now, you will have understood the basics of creating and maintaining your personal profile and company page on LinkedIn. By keeping this page constantly updated with useful and accurate information about your business, and connecting with people, businesses and organizations, you are potentially driving new business to your self storage facility.

You should also encourage your employees (managers at least) to create a LinkedIn profile and make sure they appear as employees of your company in LinkedIn. While you may only have one business page, every employee is free to create his or her own personal profile. This increases the number of mentions of your self storage business on the site. How Your Self Storage Unit Can Help You Sell Your Home

If you’re planning to sell your home this year a self storage unit is a must! One of the hardest parts of moving is selling your home first. Potential buyers want to look inside a home that is clean, free of clutter, and looks ready to move into. Many real estate agents will tell their clients to invest in a new paint job, some new carpet, and make sure the home is spic and span. But how do you keep a home you’re living in showroom ready? This is where a self storage unit comes in. Here are some easy and affordable ways a self storage unit can help you sell your home.

  1. Clear out the clutter. Since you will already be packing up, you don’t want buyers to see boxes all over the house. Instead, pack up the closets and basement, and take everything over to your self storage unit. It will keep your home clean and tidy when people come to see it.
  2. Help with repairs. If you are making small repairs and changes to spruce up the home, put some of the furniture and other items away in self storage. This will make painting, changing the carpet, and other household repairs much easier. Plus, you won’t have to worry about ruining any of your furniture or other items.
  3. Get a jump on packing. Since you will want to move as quickly as possible once you sell the home, start packing right away. Many potential buyers want a place they can move into immediately. Make your home look less lived in by putting as much as possible into your self storage unit. This will also help you when moving day comes around! You can simply have the movers stop by your self-storage unit and load items from there.

Something About Self Storage

When I sat down today and started to gather my thoughts in an effort to write a blog about self storage it occurred to me that over the past about year and a half I have written a ton of self storage blogs. I have reached out and touched many different topics within the industry of self storage from choosing the right unit for your needs, technology within self storage, boat storage, RV storage and motorcycle storage, stories about tenants within the different Storage Station locations I have worked at, customer service within self storage, Maintenance within self storage, property presentation and curbside appeal for our self storage facilities and really the list goes on and on. One thing that I have realized about self storage is that self storage is kind of like a story. Everyone has a story that they are ready to tell much like everyone that uses self storage has a reason to store and normally there is a story behind why they are storing.

I mean really, there are so many different applications and reasons for people to store their possessions whether they are household items, vehicles such as spots cars, motorcycles, dirt bikes or 4 wheelers or even office files, home furnishing,  contractor materials, stock for local business such as thrift shops and e-bay businesses and the like. Really the list of things people can and do store goes on and on. I always find it extremely interesting to find out why people need to store their items and for what reasons. Not that everyone wants to share their story or has time to but more often than not you are able to get a good idea of what peoples storing intentions are while they come in to shop for and rent a unit. I have noticed more often than not we are really helping out the general public big time with a place to store their things during certain transitions within their lives.

Whether that transition in the particular tenants life is a remodeling of their home and they are looking to store a few rooms of furniture while they do repairs or improvements, downsizing their home because of economical issues, someone who is going through a divorce and needs a place to temporarily put their possessions while they figure things out or even an entrepreneur that is looking to start up a new business and has stock of a product to sell but nowhere to store it. What I am trying to say here is that people are forever changing and people’s needs for self storage are forever changing and you really never know who will come in the door to rent a self storage unit and for what reason and it is not something that you can easily predict. One thing that I have learned and that is very clear to me is that Self Storage is a very much so an on the fly type of business and you have to be ready for anything that comes your way at any particular time.

Ultimately the self storage industry will forever be changing and the need for self storage units for the general public to utilize is inevitable whether it be short term, long term or seasonal use of a unit. Although we might not be able to predict what changes that will occur within someone’s life to make them have the need to utilize a self storage unit, one thing is for certain… When you or someone you know is going through a transition and needs to rent a self storage unit for their possessions, the staff at Storage Station will be there ready and able to help you choose the proper storage unit that is just right for your needs!

Shopping Around

If you are looking to rent at a facility that has too high of a price, you may want to continue shopping around to see if you can get a lower price from one of the competitors. You may be able to get the first facility to match the price. That way, you are able to get the space that you want at the facility you want at a price that you want. It is ok to ask the property manager what they think about matching another one of their competitor’s prices in order to gain your business.
Of course It is completely up to the property manger to decide whether or not the change in price is valid and they want to gain your business that bad. In reality every manager will want to gain as much of the business they can, but they might be in a comfortable place to where they do not have push as much to reach their occupancy goals. In some markets managers will do what they can to get people in to their stores. There have been many self storage properties that will advertise that they will beat any advertised or local price. They of course will make sure that they are comparing apples to apples.
For the facilities that believe they need to adverstise they will be and or match any local competitor they have to be careful. Some facilities are sneaky and crafty to the point in which they will match prices in their local area without advertising it. So if a customer wants to rent there at the price given, they are happy to accept those people. They will match a price or special from time to time. For the facilities that decide to match prices consistently they are missing out on charging their regular prices for the customers that chose them without shopping around. They are almost pushing the customers to shopping around. Be careful and fully think through your strategy for matching prices.

Spring is in the air

I awoke this morning and I could hear the birds chirping away as my window was open. It is really great this time of the year as the days are getting longer and warmer. It is nice to see the new green on the trees and the flowering trees out.  Now is the time to take out the barbecue and lawn furniture that you may have stored at Storage Station over the winter.  My wife will soon be saying to me that it is time to get the flowers that she plants and hangs around our patio. I must say that she does a great job doing this as it looks great when she is done.  It is also time to clean up the yard by picking up any broken branches and twigs that might be in the yard along with getting the leaves out from any shrubby you might have.  It is also time to take care of the lawn. That means putting down fertilizer with a weed killer, lime and to also thatch the lawn.

I really look forward to these spring and summer months getting together with family or friends and throwing a few steaks on the barbecue and having a few drinks.  I can remember some great picnics where we partied until late in the evening. It is such a pleasure eating outside. My wife and I love to go to restaurants and be able to eat outside especially after a long hard winter.

Since the warmer weather is here you also see a lot more motor cycles on the road. I notice this from our office here as I hear the roar of the bikes as they take them out of their units here at Storage Station.  We do have quite a few tenants that store their bikes here at Storage Station during the winter months.

I can even see a change in our tenants here at Storage Station now that the weather has gotten better.  As I do my tour of the facility and I see them, they all seem to want to chat for awhile. Most all mention how glad they are that winter is over and are also looking forward to summer and planned vacations.  A couple of tenants are going on cruises’ this spring. I mentioned to one tenant that the last time I was on a cruise which was from Cape Cod to Nantucket I did get sea sick. I got sick going there toured the island and felt better but then there was the trip back.  I had a buddy who was in the Navy who described sea sickness this way: He said that the first day out you feel miserable the second day out you wonder if you are going to live or die. The third day out you wish you were dead.  Another family is planning on going to Disneyland in Florida. I told him I was also planning to go there next spring as my granddaughters will be old enough to really enjoy it though I think my wife and I will enjoy it more seeing it through their eyes.

Spring also brings some changes here at Storage Station as we must re-set our timers and take care of the grounds. That usually means the planting of some flowers and the use of some sort of treatment for the elimination of any weeds that may grow. Though sometimes I think that is a losing battle.

Self Storage and Moving Tips Weekly Recap

We’ve been posting self storage and moving tips daily on Twitter to assist persons who may be in the process of looking for self storage or moving. These tips are also helpful in general because just about every one might need to move or seek self storage at some point in time. Thanks to everyone who has retweeted our tips so far and we hope you have found them useful. We’ll continue to post these tips daily. In case you missed any, here’s a list of our tips for this month so far:

Self Storage Tips

  1. Check with your facility about the specifics of their policies before you store your vehicle.

  2. Climate controlled units cost more than regular units so consider the value of your items before making a decision.

  3. When possible, choose a facility that is completely fenced in with controlled gate access.

  4. Although canned food items may be stored, remember that perishable items, such as produce or meat, are not allowed.

  5. If you're a business owner, keep an ongoing detailed inventory of everything business-related you will be storing.

  6. If you will be expecting deliveries, as questions like "Can the facility accept deliveries on your behalf?"

  7. National trade associations such as the US Self Storage Association can be useful sources of information.

  8. Keep boxes in uniform sizes as they are much easier to stack.

  9. Place your items on boards or pallets to protect from dampness. Any concrete floor may become cold or damp.

  10. Store drapes, curtains, and clothing on hangers. If not, these items should be carefully folded.

Moving Tips

  1. Moving Tip of the Day: Get referrals for moving companies from local real estate agents and friends who have moved recently.

  2. Only consider moves who are licensed, bonded and insured.

  3. Form two lists - one for your current place and one for your new place to help you manage where everything will go.

  4. If you're moving with family members, assign a task to each person with an estimated time of completion.

  5. Assemble a kit of basic cleaning supplies in order to clean both your old and new place.

  6. Use see through garbage bags so that you will not have to reopen bags to see if it is garbage or something you packed.

  7. Pack books flat in order to protect their spines.

  8. Label ALL boxes for easy identification.
