A Simple Thank You Can Go a Long Way!

When it comes to thanking people and showing gratitude for a variety of things, a simple thank you can go quite a long way. That thank you can range, of course, from a great gift or a wonderful, meaningful thing to a simple card and heartfelt thank you note. It doesn't matter quite what you get somebody as a thank you, though; it's the thought that counts, and the act and meaning behind the thank you itself that can get such mileage.

When it comes to thanking people that help you or assist you in any way, there are plenty of things you can do, from getting someone a nice vacation or providing them the time and resources to go, to figuring out that well-planned vacation, or providing the resources to do so along the trip, from clothes and goodies to transportation and more.

And if you're sending someone on a vacation (or helping them - big or small - get there along the way!), know that you can really make someone's great time go a long way with a meaningful thank you in the form of a perfect storage unit or inexpensive storage place for them to store their stuff as they leave town or go anywhere they please on vacation or for any other reason.

An inexpensive storage place may sound like a bizarre gift, but think about it: Americans are getting too much stuff. Over time, we accumulate more and more things that, as it turns out, we really don't need; instead of giving more possessions and stuff that's only going to collect dust for somebody, why not provide them with the tool of storage and space when it comes to making room for all that gear?

Sure, it's not the sexiest gift out there, but if you're anything like me, you love a good utilitarian gift that has purpose and meaning, and can be used day in and day out to get good value from, and a storage unit or high quality storage space can do just that. With climate-controlled units, secured access, high quality space, and cheap monthly payments, you're giving someone the gift of piece of mind, increased space, and more real estate that can allow them to have more fun in their property and store more stuff away from home.

The New Year is here, and with it comes new obligations and goals. Gone are the presents and holidays of last month, so if you're here and with us in 2013 anyways, get started on the right foot with great storage and a good map of how and where you're going to deal with all your possessions.

It may not go down in history as the coolest gift in the world, but it's a great way to say thank you to somebody if they have done something nice for you, or to provide somebody with what they need and want in terms of storage and space freeing issues.

Getting ready for Staging! - Part 2 of 3

By: Eva Prada
Once you have de-cluttered your home and stored your extra items away in a self storage unit, you are ready for the next step in the staging process: cleaning, painting and completing minor repairs.

It is time to give your home the first interior cleanings. This first cleaning is a thorough spring type cleaning. Clean your rooms from top to bottom, taking extra attention to grout, window sills, a/c vents, and light fixtures. People notice these things and it shows that your home has been well care for. While you are cleaning pay attention to small details that might need attention next, such as nicks in walls, door jams or windows. It helps to make a list to refer to later. Want to add some luster and a fresh scent to the home? Apply a little orange oil to kitchen and bathroom cabinets as well to any wood furnishing. Clean bathrooms extra good, remove any soap scum and remove and lime build ups. Remove glass shower doors and take outside to clean, vinegar helps glass get sparkling clean.

For the exterior of your home, make sure to clean your exterior walls of your home. The outside is the first thing a buyer will see. So make sure that you brush down any cobwebs or other debris. If you have well water stains on the walls, consider painting the exterior. Clean your windows and window screens, clean windows and screens let the light and fresh air in. Don’t over look your roof, if moldy; consider hiring a professional to clean it.

Front walkways or driveway pressure clean them. Again while cleaning the exterior, compile your list of minor repairs that are needed; such as the loose shutter or broken step and fix them once the exterior cleaning is complete.

Now for the interior walls, little nicks consider touch up or covering with art. However, if you have a lot of nicks or your walls look drab, consider painting the room. Nothing speaks fresh and clean like new paint. If you have rooms that don’t seem as bright or clean, some painting might be needed. Painting is a very cost effective way to renew a room. If only a couple walls need painting, instead of repainting the entire room, consider painting that wall an accent color. Small dining room, bathroom or bathroom, use dark dramatic colors to accent wall.

Want to make small rooms seem larger, paint the same color as the adjacent room. Or to create a seamless look paint the walls the same color as the drapery, making the room seem larger. Pick colors with neutral hues; they help to tone down dated finishes. Neutral colors don’t have to be boring beige; there are many neutral finishes available from warm honeys and fawn to various shades of taupe.

Remember that list you compiled while cleaning, walk your home one more time, add anything your eye catches add to your list. Even better, have a picky friend walk your home. Chances are if they see it, a potential buyer will too and buyers don’t want to purchase a home that needs repairs. Once your list is complete, address the items and make your repairs. Don’t forget to fix that squeaky hinge or loose baseboard. If you have tile with chips in it, consider a touch up. Your local hardware store has several colors to choose from. If your tile is gloss and a color, nail polish works well and comes in a wide range of gloss colors. I recommend a small touch up first and if doesn’t match remove with some nail polish remover.

Tough to open windows and sliding doors, use a little aluminum spray oil to help them open easier. For extra hard to open sliding doors, consider have the rollers and tracks repaired. I once had a extremely hard to open sliding patio door, I mean you really had to use your muscles to open it. I had the rollers and tracks repaired; it took the repair man about 2 hours and was very inexpensive. Once the door was repaired I could slide it with one finger, my only regret was that it didn’t repair it earlier. Clean again once the painting and repairs are done. Now you are ready for the actual “staging” part and making your home into a “show home”.

Reviewing Garage Storage Solutions: Different Types, Make Your Own, Overhead Garage Storage, Garden Tool Storage.

Finding the right type of garage storage solution can be difficult, and it can leave you with a mess in your garage or a lot of different types of storage that make the place look just as untidy as before. For a great storage system that is guaranteed to make a huge difference to your garage, I can recommend the UltiMate garage storage system that comes with 10 different units. It is quite expensive and is sold for just over $1,700 but you end up with a great looking storage unit that has so much room you might be hard pressed to find enough tools etc. to fill it. You do have to assemble the unit yourself which could take some time, so you may need someone else’s assistance, but once you have the storage you need you will be pleased with your effort.

The Inter-lock three shelf storage system that includes 3 shelves and 1 large and 1 small cabinet is much cheaper than the UltiMate garage storage system, it is smaller but it can hold a lot of tools and more so you can have a tidier garage that also has a clean and modern look. At a cost of about $390, these units are a lot easier to assemble because they interlock, so the screws and nails you usually have to deal with when you’re building storage systems are non-existent, and it makes the whole unit pretty strong too.

Make you own garage storage solutions

if you need some ideas about constructing your own storage systems then you don’t need to be an expert, you can make garage storage solutions yourself and if you need a bit of inspiration and help then this site might be able to give you what you need. It can help to give you some great ideas, and if you think that it all looks a bit too complicated or that you may not have the time then do not worry, it can help you decide what storage solutions you would like. Remember that it’s important to have a tidy and safe garage and if this means you have to pay cash to get it that way, that’s fine, especially if you end up very happy with the way it looks.

Popularmechanics.com is a pretty good website, it comes up with some quite novel storage solutions that you may not have thought about before and it tells you a bit about how the storage systems work, what they do and how strong they are. If you are still looking for ideas then this could be the site that helps you.

Types of garage storage solutions

There are a lot of different types of garage storage solutions and they can all be found right here this website is quite good because it goes into good detail about the specific types of storage you can get and it may help to inspire you if you are a bit stuck for ideas. You may just be thinking about different shelving units and cupboards but you can also find storage systems for bicycles and overhead storage systems too, which can save you even more space.

Storagesolutionideas.com is a good website to check out too, and it goes into quite a bit of detail that may prove to be handy. You should be prepared to be reading for a while as the site seems to go into every aspect of storage, but again, if you are short of ideas, then it’s worth reading it.

Overhead garage storage

Earlier I talked very briefly about overhead garage storage systems, and how they can save a lot of room. If this is an idea that appeals to you then the MonsterRAX overhead garage storage rack, could interest you. For approximately $250 you get a very strong system that can hold up to 600 pounds in weight, and you also have the opportunity to vary the drop, from 18 inches to 33 inches, depending on the amount of room you have spare. Storing something overhead means the material that holds your goods needs to be string and this storage rack is just that, made from industrial strength steel, you can be sure that whatever you store is safe and secure.

For a cheaper solution, the Hammertone 45 inch by 45 inch overhead storage system can work well for you at just $60. It can hold 250 pounds in weight and is made of steel wire that has been powder coated to give it extra strength and versatility. If you want to get the things that you store down easily, then you should think about putting the two shorter bars that come with the system, at the bottom, that way your things are easier to reach. You also need to make sure that you don’t over-tighten the screws as this could cause problems; you just need to find a happy medium and make sure the unit is tight enough, without in damaging the bars, while being strong enough to hold the things you store.

Garden tool storage

If you’re a bit of a gardener then you may be thinking about some garden tool storage, the Rubbermaid deluxe tool tower rack is a particularly good system and it even comes on casters so you can wheel it around if needs be. Holding up to forty tools, this rack can save you a lot of room. You may wonder if this tower rack is strong enough to hold that many tools and I can assure you it is and that the casters make it easy to maneuver around too. At just under $50, you will get a great deal for your money.

The Holeyrail Garage Organizer is excellent if you want to hang your tools up on the wall, not only is this a great way to keep your garage tidy, but it saves a lot of room too. With the capacity to hold up to 600 pounds in weight and a very easy installation process, this organizer is affordable (Sold for about $25) and easy to use, both indoors and out. You should be aware that the required ‘Pegs’ to build this system are not always included with the product, and you may have to buy them separately, so it’s always worth asking if they come with the Holeyrail Garage Organizer that you’re thinking of purchasing.

How to use Crowdsourcing to grow your self storage business

By: Jodi Reid

Prior to the advent of social media, if businesses wanted to reach a large crowd, the options were limited to expensive national television, radio and print advertising campaigns. However, social media now gives businesses, both small and large, the opportunity to access a large crowd. Crowdsourcing, a term coined by Jeff Howe in 2006, is outsourcing a job that is normally performed by an employee to a large group of people via an open call. There are several specialized sites created for allowing small businesses to reach a larger crowd. Here are a few ways in which your self storage business can take advantage of them:

  • Outsourcing – This is perhaps one of the most common uses of crowdsourcing by small business owners. If you need a flyer designed or someone to write copy for your self storage website, you can reach out to freelancers on sites such as Freelancer.com or Scripted.com. On these sites, persons can bid on tasks. One of the main advantages to this is that you are almost always guaranteed a great price on these services since there will be many people competing for your tasks. Also, you can set a budget to ensure that you do not go over a certain amount.

  • Brainstorming and product ideas – If you are stuck trying to develop innovative self storage ideas, you can ask the public for help through sites like ideavibes.com and Atizo.com. Getting the public involved is a great way to determine which ideas work and the ones that might need revising.

  • Crowdsourcing

  • Crowdfunding – If you have new self storage initiative but don’t have the resources to get it started, then you can use this method to fund the project. Sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter help persons to gather money from crowds to finance various projects. However, you will have to come up with an appealing pitch that will get people interested enough in the project to want to contribute.

  • Microtasking – As a self storage business owner, you’ll find that there is often not enough time to complete mundane, yet important tasks. Services such as Amazon Mechanical Turk and Clickworker can help to find persons who can complete these tasks for a nominal fee. Tasks on these sites start as low as $0.01 and workers are paid according to the number of tasks fulfilled.

There are many instances where your self storage business can use the crowd to help your self storage business to develop further. If you have a task or a question you want to put to the crowd, there several ways to reach them. Make use of the sites mentioned to tap into the crowd’s potential for the use of your self storage business.

Blog Ideas to Drive Your Self Storage Business

By: Jodi Reid

If there is not enough time or money in your budget to find someone to write quality content for your self storage website, but you understand the importance of marketing copy, blog posts, social media and email marketing, then you can undertake this venture yourself. If you have a website then you have the ability to publish content and can use this to your advantage. After all, who knows more about your self storage facility than you? According to Hubspot, companies with blogs get 55% more website traffic and this number increases whether you post frequently or not.

If creating a blog on your website is too costly or too complicated, there are websites that will allow you to create a blog outside your website, best of all they are free and relatively easy to use. Blogger.com, WordPress.com and Blog.com are the most popular and each has a different set of good and not so good features, go ahead, try them and find the one that works for you.

Here are some ideas for blog topics that will keep your content relevant to customers:

  • Upcoming and recent events– If you attend self storage events such trade shows, conferences and networking activities, write posts about your experiences. This can include what you learned and information about the people you met. Give other self storage industry owners a shout out on your blog and ask them to return the favor. You can also use hashtags for your events in order to engage persons.

  • Facility Reviews – Does your self storage business have a distinct advantage over competitors? If so, then write a blog post reviewing facility and its amenities alongside others in the industry. Be sure to include crucial keywords that can help with SEO efforts.

  • Posts about tips and trucks – Use your expertise in the industry to help people who might be new to self storage. You can make useful and practical posts that are still fun to read. When making instructional posts, such as best practices for packing a storage unit, try to get your points across as concisely as possible.

  • Frequently asked questions – If your customers keep asking the same question over and over again, you can write a blog post that addresses common issues. If your post is particularly helpful then it will get shared across a variety of platforms and bring even more people back to your website.

  • Helpful Tools – Do you know about a tool that would make life easier for your self storage customers? Tell people about it in a blog post. You can let you’re recommending know about the article so they can promote it via social media and in turn bring more traffic to your website.

Writing relevant blog posts takes time and patience. However, with sufficient practice, you’ll get in a groove and you’ll be well on your way to more website traffic, engagement, leads and new self storage customer.

Storage for the Bathroom Vanity.

Bathroom Vanity
Bathroom Vanity

Who could have guessed that in one of the smallest rooms in your home in just a little cabinet, there could be a large storage predicament? With washes and creams, medicines and aloes, your bathroom vanity is overflowing with all your necessities to make it through the day. This is all stuff you need to keep in your home, so self-storage is not a solution this time, but we can still help you to make your vanity an organized masterpiece.

First things first, you’ll want to make sure there are minimal items left out on the counter. Soap, toothbrush in a holder, maybe some lotion, and that should sum it up. If there are any additional items you keep on your counter for regular use, first verify if it needs to stay out or can it be put into the cabinet, and if the answer is that it needs to stay out, keep those items together in a tray like this glass vanity tray from Crate and Barrel.

Next you should concentrate on what’s in the cabinet. Take the time to go through and toss any old and expired items (yes these items do expire) to make room for the items that are still good. Next you should go through to see if there are any items you don’t need, like those five different face creams you have in there but never use. The items in your cabinet should be categorized so all medicine items are together (and easy to find,) beauty items are together, etc. This will give everything a set place to be, so once you take something out, you’ll know where to put it back when you’re done.

With your vanity organized, you can get ready faster in the morning and may even have time to stop by your storage unit at LifeStorage to switch your winter sweaters for spring friendly clothes!

Team SmartStop News

News From the Service Course

There’s a lot for pro bike racers to get excited about in January: new racing calendars, new training plans, new teammates—that’s all great and motivating.  Really though, the new equipment is the best part for every rider, and if you hang around team camp, with any pro bike team in the world, you’ll see grown men and women clapping  their hands with glee like little kids at Christmas. It’s good fun.

We aren’t letting our guys play with all their new toys yet, but we have had our service course elves busy making nice little piles out of all of the gear we’ve been getting from our incredible sponsors, and we thought you would all like to see what we have to look forward to.  Our first team camp of the season is rapidly approaching and we’ll be gathering in Winston-Salem in just a few short weeks! There’s a lot to look forward to, and you can all look forward to a lot of news from us as we start putting all of our top—of-the-line equipment and products to use, and getting underway with racing.

Adam Myerson Caps Another Successful Cyclocross Season

For those of you who follow Adam’s results on social media, or catch his interviews on Cyclingdirt.org, you’ll know that he is the first one to admit that things haven’t gone as well as he had initially hoped for this cyclocross season. Ever the true competitor, though, Adam has kept at it, stayed motivated, and put together an impressive string of results lately, as the weather has gotten nasty, and the long season has started to wear on many riders. Following a solid result at nationals, where he finished 5th in the singlespeed race and 30th in the pro race, Adam had this to say: “I’m super happy with my podium in the singlespeed race on Friday. That was a nice bonus for what has been a challenging season. 30th place in the elites is a respectable result, but not what I was hoping for. At the same time, there was a lot of crowd support out there, and a lot of people cheering, and that made it fun and was motivating.”  Grit and tenacity are what we all love about bike racing, and one of the things we love about having Adam represent our team is that he has both in spades. So congrats Adam, from your team, on a strong season. Here are some action shots from the weekend.

Lets Talk About Moving, How Self Storage Can Help

Moving can be a stressful time for anyone. It's hard to really imagine all of the different things that you have until you finally start to try and pack it all into some boxes. You might even find some boxes that you haven't touched since the last time you moved. Maybe you'll find some things that you haven't touched in years but know that you'll need to hold onto. Self storage can really help during a move. It can keep your new place organized, it can save you money, and it can make your life a whole lot easier. It doesn't matter whether you're looking into self storage in Dallas, self storage in Phoenix, or absolutely anywhere you need to go, self storage can make the difference for you.

Are you really going to need all of those boxes that you haven't touched in years? Moving is stressful enough without worrying about where you're going to have to store the things that you're probably never going to touch again anyway. Getting a storage unit to hold all of your seldom used items can help. This can make your new home look good and feel organized faster than ever. Using the unit, you can ensure that all of your stuff has a home, and it doesn't end up cluttering your new place.

One of the biggest benefits using a self storage unit during your move can be the money you can save after the move. A self storage unit can give you the opportunity to live in a smaller amount of space without worrying about filling it with clutter or throwing away the things you love. Storage space is a lot cheaper than apartment space. If you're looking to save a little money then put a little bit into some storage space, then you can get the perfect sized space for your everyday needs.

Coordinating the move can be a real challenge. You never know what will come up. Sometimes you need to move out one day but you can't move into your new place until a few days later. Having that self storage unit can save a lot of headaches. You don't need to worry about what you're going to do with your stuff while you wait to move into your new home. You can keep it safe and secure without the hassles. You can't predict the problems that can happen on moving day but it can always help to have a little extra space to put stuff.

Whether you need self storage in Dallas, or self storage in Phoenix, or maybe even self storage on the moon, you can use it to make your move a little easier. It can help you organize your new place. It can save you money, month after month, and it can give you an extra degree of certainty that everything will work out on the big day. If you're planning on moving then look into some self storage facilities in your area and find one that's right for you and your own personal needs.

Efficient Packing

Warning: gzinflate() [function.gzinflate]: data error in /home/property/public_html/wp-includes/http.php on line 1787
Who doesn’t love a rousing game of how to stack your storage unit as tight as can be? Ok well no one probably is seeking out a game like that, but many people probably should ask their property manager how if there are any good tips that they can use in order to make good choices. Most storage units are eight feet high but not many people utilize that space. That is not good money saving ideas. Your property manager is there for a reason, why not ask them questions. One thing that people have to realize is that typically there are more storage units available in addition to the one they are looking at. Let your local property manager help you.
The best way to use the space in your storage unit efficiently is to know how to pack everything into the space. You do not just want to throw everything into the storage unit and worry about it later. Some people do not plan properly and they run out of time with having to return their rental trucks and so forth. So they end up just throwing their belongings into the storage space. That could be very bad because of trying to find something later and also in the amount of room you are wasting.
You will probably be spending extra money that you do not have to because you could actually go with a smaller space. A good way to get everything efficiently into the space is to use boxes for your things. They sell a variety of boxes at the site so you should definitely check it out. With boxes, especially getting ones that are the same, will allow you to stack high and take up all the floor space. If you are one who needs to get to all their belongings, maybe you should talk with your property manager about getting a larger space so you can maneuver around. Just ask about the cost difference.

Weekly Webinar Topic: 7 Pieces of Tenant Data To Collect Before Bidding

How Do The Pros Gather Intel?

At many auctions, professional auction hunters regularly show up with a cache of knowledge and information in their back pocket that allows them to place their bids with confidence. Have you ever found yourself wondering just how they seem to know so much?

shutterstock_77851792

What are some reasons we may need storage?

Not everyone needs to rent a self storage unit. Some people have garages, attics, basements or some place to put things out of the way. But as we all know there are some of us that just are not that lucky to have those spots to tuck our things away.

I can tell you that it is not easy to keep anything that you do not use every day in an apartment that you are renting. If you move to a smaller home and just do not feel comfortable getting rid of all your extra stuff. Who knows your children may need something after college. And we all hate to say it but what if a family member passes away. You need time to go through all of their belongings and still sell the house that has 50 years worth of different things that have found their place in that home.

This is something that I see all the time you have your own year’s worth of clutter in your home and maybe your garage or shed as well. MY favorite is when a customer comes in to my store (Storage Station) at 2354 Hamburg Turnpike Wayne New Jersey and says well my wife has too much stuff and she just gives him that look. Let me tell you the next thing is that she starts naming all of his things that she wants out of the house. That is classic and just makes me laugh and say well I’m sure we all have some things that could be put in a self storage unit. I think that if you have a hobby that is a good reason to   have a self storage unit. For an example if you like fishing you could store your boat her in the winter. If you have a company and really just do not have very much space at the office for supplies or even files you could out them here at Storage Station.

We also have boxes and moving supplies if you need them. You never want your office to look like a mess after all it is one of the first things your customer is seeing when coming to talk with you. Over stock sometimes can be an issue but we can help you with that. Storage Station has many different size units for you to pick from even climate controlled. The great thing about it all is that we have 24/7 access so you can come in and out any time you need to.

We have video surveillance which should make you feel better about storing your things here.  It almost  like if you had them in your home. We treat your belonging as we would want ours treated with respect. I am sure that there are a lot more reasons why people want to use self storage out there but it would take me a very long time to list all the good reasons people have to store with us at Storage Station. So if you are one of the people above that have some of those reasons or your own reasons to use self storage then come on over to 2354 Hamburg Turnpike Wayne New Jersey and let us help you…you’ll be glad that you did.

Don’t Let the Clutter Win! Organize Your Self-Storage Unit

If you’re anything like me, being organized is about as likely to happen as my ’89 Bronco getting good gas mileage (it’s okay Bertha, I still love you). However, the effort needs to be taken to get a storage unit organized in order to keep your property safe, easily accessed, and to maximize the potential of the storage units floor space. Use these helpful tips that I’ve seen implemented to improve your chances of actually finding what you’re looking for when you visit the unit.

Before You Pack
A lot of people shoot themselves in the foot right off the bat by not transporting their property in an organized way. Think about what items you will need the soonest, or the most frequently, and move those aside until the end. Pack up and transport your largest items first since you will want them towards the back of the unit and to fit smaller items around them.

Proper Containers
Too often we open up a storage unit before an auction to be accosted by a damp, musky odor. This happens when items like paper documents or clothes get stored improperly and mold can take hold. Avoid using plastic trash bags to keep moisture sensitive  items in since plastic does not breathe and moisture can easily become trapped. Use cardboard boxes instead. Not only can air circulate easier, but they stack easily and will not crush the items inside them like a bag will.

The Floor Plan
It might seem counter intuitive to leave a path – either down the middle or along a wall – since it takes up floor space, but you’ll be thanking yourself when you have to get something from a dark corner in your storage unit. I have to shake my head and sigh whenever I see some poor sap gutting their entire unit out just to get to one particular box. Save yourself the heartache and give yourself a way to get back there.

Organization and Safety
Everyone has different needs when it comes to a storage unit, but there are still some general organization tips that everyone can follow to make their lives a little easier when it comes to finding stuff and keeping their property safe.

  • Label. Everything. I don’t care who you are, all cardboard boxes look the same after you haven’t visited a storage unit for a few months. Make sure your labels are descriptive as possible as well. Instead of having five boxes labeled Kitchen, have them labeled Kitchen Cutlery, Kitchen Glassware, and so on and so forth.
  • Birds of a Feather. A good way to lose track of things, even if they’re labeled, is to scatter boxes willy-nilly throughout the unit. Take time to group like-minded boxes together, and I even suggest mapping out a bird’s eye view of which groups are where within the unit. This might sound like overkill, but it truly helps especially with the larger self-storage units.
  • Physics! Okay, I don’t understand physics, but I do know that it is best to place the heaviest items and boxes on the bottom. This helps to keep your items safe since it will be less likely for something to get crushed, and the boxes will be less likely to shift around and potentially fall.
  • Dust, the Silent Killer. Sorry for the dramatic phrasing, but dust can wreak havoc on appliances and electronics if they’re left stored for long periods of time. A friend of mine lived in Korea for a few years and used a self-storage unit to house his washer and dryer, among other items, while he was away. Upon his return he found the appliances to be filled with dust, and in a fit of glorious irony he discovered just how difficult it is to clean a washer. Take the time to cover and protect your items from dust, and other nuisances.

Take the extra time to organize your storage unit. Even if you don’t think you’ll need to access it in the near future, who knows what the future will bring? An organized unit saves a user so much time in the short, and long run.

Seam Scrutiny

Properly done, seams should not be an issue in linoleum installation

Forbo QA1Q. We are remodeling an older home and I was “sold” on Marmoleum, until I kept coming across questions about repairing seams which have buckled.

I want to use it in the bathroom floors, but I am really hesitant since reading all these questions about repairing the seams.

Have you had questions on this and/or how do you feel about using Marmoleum in the bathrooms?

Many thanks!

–  LM

Sequim, WA

A. Dear LM:

If you are using Marmoleum sheet goods that are installed by a contractor who is properly trained, you should have no problems with seams that need repair.

The seams have to be heat-welded,   which requires some skill.  Forbo, the manufacturer of this product, offers training classes Forbo QA2and certification of installers.

The retailer you purchase the product from should be able to supply or recommend a qualified installer.

Marmoleum Click products are also on option for residential use. This product is made in panels and squares that click together and have a High Density Fiber (HDF) core and cork backing, which will offer more warmth and shock absorption than sheet goods. This self-locking product does not require heat-welded seams.

In both cases, the Marmoleum surface is made of all natural ingredients, including linseed oil, pigments and sawdust.

Tips to boost your self storage company with Pinterest

The newest social media phenomenon to capture attention of the masses is Pinterest. With over 5 million users, it is an online organizational board used to share pictures which can be linked to wherever a user chooses. While the site does not offer the ability for people to purchase anything, these images are linked back to the original source which, if re-pinned by others, will increase traffic to your self storage website. Here area some tips to attract the attention of potential customers and spread the word about your self storage facility:

  • Keep it simple – The main appeal of this site is its simplicity. Therefore, it is important to keep this in mind when designing your profile page. The ‘pinned’ items on each board should be the same size, with links on each image.

  • Promote using other social networking sites – Since Pinterest is fairly new, you can ask people who currently like your Facebook page or follow you on Twitter to follow your Pinterest. Use your presence on these sites to point people to this new site.

  • Launch a daily pin theme – You can have multiple boards and put similar pictures of your self storage facility on one board in order to build a theme. Build these themes around what is happening in your self storage facility, e.g. charity work. Daily themed pins usually lead to repeat visitors since people will come back to look for a new one.

  • Follow popular Pinterest users – If you follow popular pages and get them to follow you back, then this will get the word out about your self storage facility. Also, follow users who ‘pin’ your items in order to encourage them to follow back.

Pinterest has been gaining notable footing, especially among female users. If utilized correctly, you should be able to use this as another social media avenue to promote your self storage facility and interact with potential customers.

How do you store your holiday goodies?

By: Allaire Williams

There’s a holiday almost every other month in the year. If you’re part of an organization or just like to decorate, you should have a large accumulation of items. Between New Year’s, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Kwanzaa, you could use some extra space! That’s not even including the other holidays and special occasions that may occur throughout the year that you celebrate.

If you’re a serious decorator, you may switch things up beyond holidays. Maybe you like seasonal trends – bright colors for spring and summer, warm colors for fall and winter. That means taking down curtains, changing table settings and other things. With all that decorating flair, where do you store everything?

A self-storage unit would be an excellent way to safely store your things while keeping them accessible. If you live in an apartment, it’s almost a guarantee that you don’t have room to house all those decorations and home goods. Even if you have a home, if there is no spare bedroom or room in the garage (if you have one), this could be very problematic. Having a self-storage unit could solve all your problems for a few dollars per month. You want to assess everything you have to determine what kind of self-storage you need and how big. If you have candles and things that could possibly melt, you should look into having a climate-controlled unit. If your place is very small, once you pull out the holiday decorations, will you need to rearrange your furniture? You can put some furniture into storage until the season is over, giving the unit a dual-purpose, further maximizing your money!

If you decide self-storage is your best option, here are a couple of tips to use when storing your holiday and seasonal items:

  • Maximize your space. Group items together by season. The four seasons, fall, winter, spring and summer should all have their own section and bins or whatever you use to organize.

  • Every holiday that falls within that season should be stored together. For example, Thanksgiving plates and decorations should be in the fall section.

  • Everything should be properly labeled so you know exactly what it is. This will keep the confusion down and you can go right to the section and container.

  • Make a blueprint so you will know where everything is.

  • Always put the heavy items on the bottom. Dishes and breakables always go on top.

  • Depending on the size, try to organize things in a “U” fashion so you will have a walkway.

  • Although you are organizing, try to keep things simple. You don’t want to defeat your purpose.

  • Make sure you are packing your holiday things properly.

Getting an affordable self-storage unit and using these tips can take quite a bit of pressure and clutter out of your life. The holidays are meant to be enjoyed, not become a headache. This is a simple solution to your holiday storage problems and more!

Tips for Choosing the Right Self Storage Unit

Whether you are new to self storage or you are a regular user, a few things should be kept in mind when choosing a self storage unit. Many people tend to overlook certain details and focus solely on the price. While getting a great deal and taking advantage of discounts are important things to consider, do not fall into the trap of sacrificing quality for price. Keep the following in mind when looking for a self storage unit:

  • Determine the size of the unit ahead of time – It is wise to know how much space is needed prior to renting or reserving a self storage unit. Many self storage facilities offer the ability to virtually place items into a unit online so that you can have an idea of how your things will fit. There are also helpful guidelines listed such as a detailed explanation of popular storage unit sizes and the items which usually fit.

  • Be organized – One of the pitfalls that many fall into is not being properly organized before or during the process of moving things into self storage. Whether you have many items or just a few, it is best to come up with a game plan about how you will organize your self storage unit. If possible, try to arrange your items before bringing them to the storage unit.

  • Consider the distance – How quickly and easily you will need to access your items should be a deciding factor. If there is a better deal available at a location several miles from you, think about whether saving a few extra dollars on rent is worth the commute. If you need to access the unit often (a few times a month), it would be a better idea to choose a facility closer to you.

  • Assess if your items need special consideration – Not all items in self storage can be treated equally. This means that not every item can be stored in the exact same condition. For example, there are delicate items which might crack or break due to extreme heat or cold. A climate controlled unit is one option that would eliminate the need to worry about the condition of your belongings after placing them in self storage.

If you are not very familiar with self storage units, remember to visit the facility before making a final decision. Viewing the actual space will be easier than trying to estimate in your head. If you follow these guidelines and thoroughly plan ahead of time, then choosing a self storage facility will be a breeze.

A Guide to Using Self-Storage Whilst Travelling the Globe

Storage Units

Self Storage Units

You’re going to be hitting the road for a few weeks, a few months or even a few years. Maybe it’s too long a time to fall back on friends or family, or no one you know has space or you just don’t feel like burdening anyone with all your stuff. Here’s where a self storage facility will come in handy, keeping your possessions safe while you’re out roaming the world.

Choosing a Self-Storage Company

The first step will be choosing a self-storage company. Personal recommendations are best; if anyone you know has done something similar, talk to them and find out what their experiences were. Here are some things you should keep in mind when you’re looking at different companies:

How much does it cost? Is it easy to pay? Most companies, for example, will set up direct debits. You’ll want something automatic so you won’t need to worry about payment when you’re out traveling.

What’s the security like? Are you satisfied with the level of security offered?

Do you need a climate-controlled storage area?

Is the company easy to communicate with? You may want to be reassured about the safety of all your worldly possessions from time to time.

Is insurance available? What happens in the worst case scenario: your things are stolen or destroyed?

You’ll find the answers to the above questions vary a lot from company to company, and only you can weigh the importance of the different factors. If cost is the difference between a three-month trip and a six-month trip, for example, you’ll probably rate that factor higher than if you have money to spare and valuable possessions that need careful storage conditions.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, pay a visit to all the self-storage companies you’re considering. Don’t hesitate to ask plenty of questions, examine the facilities and get a feel for the company and its employees.

Preparing Your Belongings for Self-Storage

Now it’s time to pack your stuff. Give yourself enough time to sort your belongings thoroughly. This is a good time to get rid of a lot of your possessions. You’ll pay less for a smaller unit.

When you’ve decided what you’re going to keep, consider how you want your items stored. Research the best way to store items like books, clothing or whatever else you’re keeping. The storage company itself may have tips. Avoid just slinging your possessions into random cardboard boxes. Get proper moving supplies. Pack your belongings carefully so they’ll be in good shape when you return. Label your boxes. Your research on the best way to store items should include finding out what kinds of items should be stacked on top of others. When moving day comes, load your mobile storage unit, or drive your belongings to the storage facility. Based on the research you’ve done, pack your belongings efficiently and safely.

On the Road
Be sure to leave the storage company with one or two emergency backup contacts in case you can’t be reached. These should be reliable people you can trust to pay your bill if the methods you’ve set up fail or who are able to deal with any other problems that might arise with the storage unit you’ve rented.

Keep in mind, though, that such scenarios are highly unlikely. If you took your time and made a good choice of storage company, you should have peace of mind on the road regarding the possessions you left behind. The whole point in taking off to travel the globe is to get yourself in a different head space, and that means not fretting too much about what might be happening back at home. Your belongings are safe, and they’ll be there for you when you return again someday; having made a good self-storage selection based on the criteria that’s most important to you, you’re free to focus on your once-in-a-lifetime trip with your mind set at ease.
