AUSTIN, Texas – Dec 1, 2011 – SpareFoot, provider of leading web marketing tools to the self-storage industry, announced the launch of its newest product, SiteBuilder. Designed to simplify everything about creating and maintaining an effective self-storage company website, SiteBuilder helps storage operators compete to win increasingly web-dependent consumers.

Facility clients get a customizable, easy-to-update website that’s proven to convert visitors into tenants. Users upload their facility logo and photos, and customize brand messaging. SpareFoot’s intuitive content management system (CMS) makes it easy to make changes anytime, without having to call in the expensive web developer or designer. What’s the most effective way to move?

When faced with a situation that will require you to move, you may be caught off guard. When that happens, it’s time to regroup and assess the situation. Typically, it may not be the best situation, but it’s up to you to make it a conducive situation that meets your needs.

First think about the major things:

  • Is it something you can do yourself or will you have to hire movers?
This is a very important question. If you have the means to do it yourself, you want to make sure you know exactly what you need for a flawless move. It wouldn’t make sense to not have the proper equipment or packing tools because you will end up having more damage than it’s worth. If you have to hire movers, do your research. You want movers that have a stellar reputation of getting the job done and doing exactly what they were hired to do in the time allotted. Make sure they are reputable and have a great history of being conscientious with customer belongings.

  • Know the costs involved.
There are costs involved, period. Whether you are moving yourself, which would include gas, blankets and renting a truck if you don’t have one, there is a significant amount of money that may come into play. With movers, make sure you know the total costs involved and make sure there are no hidden fees. You don’t want to get caught up into a situation where you are faced with paying hundreds of dollars that weren’t anticipated. And make sure if you are using a moving company, insure your items for the full amount.

  • Make sure you have the proper packing tools.
This includes the correct sizes and types of boxes, bubble wrap, newspaper, packing tape, markers and possibly labels. Boxes can be found anywhere, but if you will have to store items, new boxes are the best. You can find them online, at home improvement stores and even Walmart. This is important so that you won’t break your valuables and you also know where each and every box will go. If you have items that will be transferred to a self-storage facility, it’s good to have those with neon colored labels so there will be no confusion.

  • Have all your paperwork in order.
This is a very crucial step. If you’re moving to an unfamiliar area, have your route mapped out. If you’re using movers, make sure you have all their contact numbers, your contract numbers and they have your contact numbers in their possession. It’s good to have a moving notebook that lists your inventory and everything associated with the move in one handy place. A bright colored notebook works best to easily be found.

  • Make sure you have the keys for your new place and a lock for your self-storage facility, especially if you are moving your things in after hours.

This is just a general listing, but should get you started and in the right mindset to have a smooth, effective move.

Cork 2013-Style

Cork flooring leaders stay true to sustainable cork, but some are cashing in on vinyl, too

013 (678x1024)New cork flooring introductions from Wicanders Cork are smoother. New planks from Qu-Cork are skinnier. And APC Cork has officially stepped into the people-friendly product market by getting indoor-air quality certification, like most of the competition.

In partial contradiction to the planet-friendly attributes of cork, cork leaders USFloors and Wicanders also are selling Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), though both lines also contain cork.

“Luxury LVT has been gaining traction in the US over the past few years,” says Tim Tompkins, national marketing manager for Wicanders manufacturer, Amorim North America. “This, however, has not come at the expense of our other cork lines. In fact, we are experiencing our third straight record year in just cork flooring sales in North America.”

Cork Wic 1

Wicanders' Artcomfort Cork

Wicanders’ Artcomfort Cork

Over the past year, wholesale vinyl sales have continued record growth, jumping 11.8 percent in value and 8.6 percent in volume. During the same time period, U.S. sales of cork, rubber, linoleum, and plastic flooring combined increased 8.9 percent in wholesale value, but volume decreased 1.1 percent.

QU-Cork

“Sales of Qu-Cork flooring are continually growing,” says Peter Lucchesi, regional sales manager for
Global Market Partners, Inc.  “The market has seen a significant increase in vinyl sales. But if those sales are taking away from other categories, it would be laminates and linoleum, not cork.”

Designer Narrow Planks are the most recent addition to the Qu-Cork line-up, which until now consisted of 1-foot by 3-foot panels. Qu-Cork also is the originator of a super smooth nano finish that maintains its clarity despite the natural movement of cork, which can cause microscopic cracks in harder finishes.

Similar to USFloors’ Almada cork, Qu-Cork’s new Designer Narrow Planks are similar to hardwood planks, only made of cork, that are almost 46 inches in length. This product has a 25-year residential wear and 5-year light commercial warranty.

Qu-Cork

Qu-Cork

All Qu-Cork products also have GREENGUARD Gold Indoor-Air Quality Certification, a more stringent standard than GREENGUARD. And the backs of the panels are infused with the antimicrobial Microban, which no longer contains triclosan.

Qu-Cork Cork

Qu-Cork Cork

APC Cork

APC Cork now also contains Microban, and has achieved GREENGUARD Indoor-Air Quality Certification as part of a recent switch of its manufacturing to the Granorte Company of Portugal.  They are introducing a new line of 7-inch by 46-inch planks in patterns and colors that are not present in
the cork industry, says Cristina Diaz, APC marketing director. Their products also will be featuring a six-coat, UV-cured nano finish.

“And we are offering vinly and cork, recycled leather and cork and wood and cork floors through special order,” Diaz says.

Wicanders

Wicanders Cork, which has GREENGUARD Indoor-Air Quality Certification, most recently has introduced its Artcomfort product line. This revolutionary product uses Wicanders Realistic Surface technology to create the authentic looks of wood, slate, tile, marble and granite, digitally embossed directly onto the cork surface. So the product offers the look of harder flooring surfaces while providing the benefits of cork, which include sound and shock absorption and warmth, in addition to a naturally antimicrobial and anti-allergy surface.

Realistic replication – making one surface look like a completely different material – is a major reason, in addition to lower prices, Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) sales are soaring,” says Steve Contois, vice president of sales for Carpetland Carpet One in Cincinnati.

“Replication has improved dramatically,” he says. “You often cannot tell the difference simply by looking. When you combine the appearance and price with self-locking installation that requires no adhesive, LVT often wins out.”

Wicanders Vinylcomfort

Wicanders Vinylcomfort

No doubt both Wicanders, with its Vinylcomfort line, and USFloors, with its recently launched Core-Tec line, intend to get their share of the record-high demand for LVT. Wicanders currently is evaluating its product, in hopes of making it free of phthalates — a plasticizer that has shown a possible connection to endocrine disorders. Manufacturers who have eliminated phthalates include Tarkett and  DuChateau Hardwood.

Both Core-Tec and Vinylcomfort also contain cork or cork backings.

“Retailers enjoy offering the consumer all of the features and benefits of cork, while diversifying these items in their showrooms in two separate and distinct categories,” Tompkins says.

Artcomfort – with its realistic patterning on a natural cork, rather than vinyl or plastic surface – moves into a higher-end product category. And this line will see another breakthrough in 2014, when Wicander’s launches its new Natural Power Coat UV-cured urethane finish, Tompkins said.

For now, details of this finish are still proprietary. But Tompkins says the finish increases the clarity of the finish and enhances the natural structure of the cork floor. And it increases the residential finish warranty to 20 years and our light commercial finish to 10 years.

Is it something like Qu-Cork’s nano finish? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. ©

Back to School Tips for an easy transition

The summer’s over and it’s time to get the kids ready to tackle a brand new school year. For parents, this is the time to get your children into school mode. There’s lots to do before that first day – shopping for clothes and school supplies, doctor’s appointments and more. One of the most important things you can do is re-establishing the routine that has probably been forgotten once the last school bell rang. Here are a couple of tips to get your child back in the habit:

  • Re-establish the daily routine – Now is the time when you should be setting bed times, establishing waking times, having routine breakfasts, getting dressed and even leaving in the mornings to get your child used to going to school every day. If there is a new school or a new time change, this is very important. You want to make sure your child is not thrown off by anything new occurring within the morning school routine.

  • Create a holding zone – This is where everything should go the night before. All book bags, jackets and in the mornings, school lunches. Your child will know to look in the zone before asking for something, and you will know where they can find everything they need.

  • Homework Helper – There should be a designated space and time for homework to be done once your child is at home. This area should have everything they need to get their work done consistently and efficiently.

  • Afterschool and sick day plans – Your child should know where to go afterschool, whether it’s on the school bus, to the aftercare facility or walking home. On sick days, you should have an effective plan in place. Make sure this plan is in effect prior to the start of school.

  • Go over your safety plan – Having a safety plan in place for your child is important. They should know how to act in the event of a tragedy at school, on the bus, or walking home. Go over standard safety procedures with your child to ensure they are well-equipped to handle these situations.

  • Make a nightly schedule – This should include bathing, any readings, laying out school clothes and anything that should be done for the next day.

  • Once your child does these things a couple of weeks, they should be ready to tackle the everyday hustle and bustle of going to school. This is a very exciting time for your child, as a new school year is starting, allowing them to experience new people and new adventures. Start the year off right without them encountering the added stress of not having a schedule in place. You’ll thank your lucky stars once you realize it’s working. At Usselfstoragelocator.com, we strive to make sure you have the tips you need for everyday living. Have a great back-to-school transition!

Thing Ahead of the Customer

Warning: gzinflate() [function.gzinflate]: data error in /home/property/public_html/wp-includes/http.php on line 1787

Believe it or not, customers know when they are being sold to. Surprise. That is a shock to many different people or maybe its not. It blows the minds of many that think that managers really do not realize that the people that call them know that they are being sold to. If the managers are not thinking that way, then they might be missing more than just that. Property managers should always have the thought process that they have to win the customer away from whomever the customer called before them. That has to be the objective.

When managers are thinking ahead of the customers they are putting their selves in a good place. They can have different scenarios thought out and planned so they can be prepared to rebuttal if the customer has an issue. The more the manager tries to prepare for what the customer could say the better equipped they are to get the customer to rent with them. The end game for the manager is to get the customer to rent. If you as a manager are not thinking about renting spaces then you are in the wrong profession.

Property managers need to be a step ahead of the customers but with that said, they also can not put the customer in a weird or awkward place. When a customer tells the manager no, the manager has to be cool, calm and collective. The manager needs to ensure that they know what their next move will be and breathe before responding. If the manager goes on full blown attack mode, that can leave to the customer leaving the store or hanging up the phone. That is not what the manager wants to happen.

When a customer calls the store or drops in, they are telling you that they want a storage space, but what are you going to do about it? Some managers think that they can just throw a price at the customer and that will win them over. Customers care about more than just the price. They are coming into the facility to check everything out and ensure that it is the place that they want to rent from. They are checking you out as a manager as well. The manager is a big piece of the pie when it comes to the customer. The property manager really can tilt the property in favor of the company if they handle this customer correctly.

Self storage is not rocket science. As a manager you don’t have to wait for all the stars to align for you to get the customer to rent with you. All you have to do is anticipate any objections they would have with your property. You can find all kinds of different things that the customer will come up with in order to say no. They have already made the first commitment. They are asking you for storage. Now you just have to think ahead of them and come up with some solution for them that the customer does not see.

CubeSmart won’t be ‘significant disposer’ of assets in foreseeable future

Self-storage REIT CubeSmart LP definitely has been in buy-and-sell mode in 2013.

So far this year, CubeSmart has purchased 15 facilities for $148.5 million while shedding 35 facilities for $126.4 million. It’s also under contract to buy 36 facilities for $362 million. But from here on out, CubeSmart plans to hang onto the bulk of its facilities.

“We’re very, very pleased with where the portfolio is today, and I wouldn’t expect significant amounts of dispositions in the foreseeable future,” Chris Marr, president, chief operating officer and chief investment officer, told Wall Street analysts Nov. 8.

Marr noted that CubeSmart would entertain a “ridiculous” acquisition offer if it came along and would continue to evaluate its portfolio for selling opportunities. CubeSmart will maintain its focus on core markets like New York City, Houston and Miami, he said.

Chris Marr

Chris Marr

“We own assets … everywhere that we would like to be. So we’re very comfortable with where our assets are located, the quality of those assets,” Marr said. “So I don’t perceive us to be a significant disposer of assets from this point forward.”

CubeSmart gains about 70 percent of its net operating income from top-tier locales that it characterizes as core investment markets. Wayne, PA-based CubeSmart operates more than 500 self-storage facilities in the U.S.

Tim Martin, CubeSmart’s chief financial officer, said the REIT expects to finance future acquisitions through a variety of avenues, including free cash flow, disposition proceeds, an at-the-market equity program and debt financing.

Farewell to Jernigan
During the Nov. 8 call, Dean Jernigan chatted formally with Wall Street analysts for the final time as CEO. Jernigan is retiring effective Dec. 31 after seven years at the helm, with Marr stepping in to succeed him.

“Chris Marr has been a CEO in the making for at least 15 years,” Jernigan said. “He’s performed every role in an exceptional, outstanding manner that I’ve asked him to perform … all the way back to since 1994, when Chris joined our company.”

As for his own plans, Jernigan said he will remain a long-term shareholder of CubeSmart and will serve as a consultant for Marr. At a recent conference sponsored by the Florida Self Storage Association, Jernigan said he’ll be launching a consulting and merchant banking firm effective Jan. 1.

dean jernigan

Dean Jernigan

As Marr ascends to CEO, his current duties as chief operating officer and chief investment officer will go unfilled temporarily, he said. When it comes time to hire for those jobs, Marr expects CubeSmart to look only at internal candidates. Marr will retain his position as president.

“Since Dean’s arrival, we have sold 143 assets for proceeds of $440 million,” Marr said. “This represents a disposition of nearly one-third of the portfolio that existed at the end of ’06. We have reinvested those proceeds, along with additional capital, into $1.5 billion of acquisitions.”

Facilities acquired under current management represent nearly half of Cube’s gross asset value, Marr said.

Jernigan said the self-storage space, unlike the apartment sector, shouldn’t see any immediate headwinds from new construction.

“The crystal ball is very clear on this,” Jernigan said. “We have a dearth, shortage, deficiency—whatever you want to call it—of new construction of storage facilities. And my crystal ball is very clear that we will not have any kind of headwind for … at least another 24 months from new construction.”

Strong Third Quarter
Jernigan is going out on a financial high note.

CubeSmart’s funds from operations (FFO) in the third quarter rose 44 percent over the same period a year ago, and FFO per share grew 32 percent. FFO is a key financial benchmark for REITs.

CubeSmart reported 10 percent growth in same-store net operating income—its second consecutive quarter of “double-digit, sector-leading, same-store NOI growth,” Marr said.

CubeSmart’s same-store occupancy for the quarter stood around 90 percent. In the year-ago period, same-store occupancy was 85.2 percent.

The Mobile Environment: How does yours measure up?

In today’s technological environment, everything is a challenge. Knowing how to integrate and navigate mobile apps into your business model is crucial in staying ahead of the game. When determining your strategy, don’t think of adding mobile apps as just a numbers game. There is much more to consider. You need to move beyond the statistics and think about the end user. What are your clients looking for, and how do you make their visit better?

Viewing a website on a mobile device is quite different from the standard user experience. You can hinder your rankings by having a mobile environment that isn’t user friendly. Although SEO is slightly different from a mobile perspective, you need to have links and keyword optimization – yes, even on mobile platforms. Also focus on your bounce rate, page load times and the reduction of redirects. This will help you gain value in your SEO strategies and performance. You’ll even start to see a direct difference in your rankings.

When deducing your logic for your SEO, think about the size of a mobile device. The screen is smaller, but having the right information is key. Make sure your titles, meta data and content include keywords that will help the user find what they want quickly. People using mobile devices are just that – mobile. They may not have the time to sift through pages like they would normally do in a desktop environment. Taking that into consideration a unresponsive design will help you design a better platform for your customers.

Most savvy businesses are moving into the world of responsive design. What’s that? It’s when your mobile site is optimized to become your mobile platform. It grabs the size of your screen and adjusts so that your users will have the complete website at their fingertips. This helps alleviate the need to have separate coding and apps. For businesses that utilize search engines, this could be a great help. One of the great things about having a responsive design is that all your keywords and meta data can remain the same, saving time and manpower. It’s done once and you can move on.

Even with responsive design, you need to make sure that your mobile user experience is working well enough for your customers to view it as a valued resource. Having a website that doesn’t provide enough information, or help the customer find what they need in an adequate length of time is like throwing out the baby with the bath water. Consider your content and how it is used. The purpose of having a website is to provide your potential clients, current clients and general public with a resource that can be trusted.

If you do go the mobile app route, make sure it’s tested and free of bugs. You would hate to spend all that time and money for bad reviews and the worst of all – deletion. Bad apps can make that happen. Don’t get caught in the mix – make your mobile experience worthwhile.

Essential Social Media Analytics Tools for Your Self Storage Business

A solid social media marketing plan needs sounds strategies and also a method of evaluation. Evolving social media initiatives can be time consuming. Self storage business owners do not always have a lot of extra time, between handling the overall operations of the facility and supervising employees. However, there are quite a few social media analytics tools that can help you evaluate your marketing efforts. Aside from the main social media managements tools like Hootsuite, TweetDeck, or SproutSocial, which provide built-in analytics, there are several other options as well. Here are a few must-have tools to help with evaluating social media campaigns:

  • Google Analytics - If you have a self storage website, it is highly likely that you are already using this tool. If not, then you should implement it as soon as possible. It is completely free of cost and can track the number of visits to your website and the sources of these visits. There is even a social analytics module specifically designed for presenting data gathered from social networking profiles. Tools like Hootsuite can also be integrated into Google Analytics to provide even more comprehensive reports.

  • Bit.ly or Owl.ly - There is very little difference between these two services and the value they both provide is noteworthy. The biggest advantage of being able to track links is that you are able to easily see whenever someone clicks a link on a tweet, Facebook status or whichever social network you choose to place content. There are great analytics included and, as an added plus, you are able to shorten links which saves space when using tools that have limitation on the number of characters you can use.

  • Sumall - Currently in beta, this relatively new tool introduces numerous analytics features that are absent from existing products on the market. It can provide your self storage business with ample data on almost every single social networking site that is currently available. It can also use your self storage facility’s historical data and trends and tailor the insights to your business.

  • Feedly - When using social media, it is important that self storage business owners understand that the dialogue on these networks should be a conversation and not a dictation. If you are only promoting your business, then you are missing the point. Reciprocity is important as well. Share other relevant content that is of value to your audience. This tools take the data on various websites you are interested in and lists them in an easy way for your to read. This way, you can keep up with topics worth noting on track what competitors are doing in social media.

  • ManageFlitter - Once your self storage business’ profile starts amassing followers, it can be difficult to track the people who follow you and vice versa. You can use this tool to figure out who is not following back and which important users you are not following. You can also unfollow people in bulk. The value of this tool is that it helps you to clean up your Twitter profile and assess which campaigns worked well and which didn’t based on the number of reciprocal followers you have.

If you eventually decide to adopt one or a combination of these analytics tools, there are several questions to ask before undertaking this. These include why your self storage business needs an evaluation platform and what is the value. While some tools are free, there is still a commitment of time so picking the right one is essential.

Suspect of several recent self storage burglaries was apprehended.

The people in the town of Tuckahoe can rest a little easier now that a man suspected of breaking into a CubeSmart self storage facility has been apprehended by police. The man has been identified as Daniel Vargas, a 29-year-old drifter from the Bronx with a long history of criminal activity.

The break-in occurred in September and Vargas is also accused of being connected to several recent self storage burglaries at other CubeSmart locations. Police suspect that he might be involved in a bigger, more coordinated set of organized burglaries.

On September 13, over 20 lockers at the self storage facility were burglarized. Police in Tuckahoe are in communication with law enforcement in Mount Vernon, Yorktown and Rockland where other units have suffered the same fate.

Bringing Vargas in was not an easy task for the police. Sgt. Paul D'Onofrio allegedly saw Vargas attempting to gain access to the self storage facility around 12 a.m. on the night in question. When asked about what he was doing, Vargas pushed D’onofrio and then ran away. Luckily, members from the Tuckahoe police department arrived to provide backup and they were able to subdue him. The sergeant was treated for pulled groin, knee and hand injury. Rubber gloves and screws were recovered from Vargas’ possessions and several self storage units in the CubeSmart facility showed evidence of damage.

Vargas was charged with assault, attempted burglary, criminal possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest. After being held in the Westchester County jail without bail, he was arraigned last Saturday in Tuckahoe Village Court.

Tips on Creating a Social Media Policy

A social media policy helps to provide a set of guidelines for governing the how employees use social media as the voice of a business. It can help to provide a blueprint for what should happen in the event of a crisis and assist with outlining how social media should be dealt with on a whole. However, many self storage business owners do not give much thought to a social media policy. The truth is people often only think about what they would do in the event of a crisis when they are actually in the middle of one. Due to how quickly information spreads in the social media arena, planning ahead is not only smart but also absolutely essential. Here are some tips on how to create and implement a social media

· Find your voice – Determine the tone of the social media policy before writing it. Do you want it to be a set of rules that employees are bound to follow or are you setting out to suggest best practices that employees are free to interpret and follow. Sometimes the word ‘policy’ might create too strict of an atmosphere so you can possibly replace with ‘tips’ or ‘guidelines’ if you are trying to go for a more relaxed tone.

· Examine legal implications – As with any other employee policy, ensure that you have covered all your bases in the event that you can be subject to legal action. There have been many instances where people have been fired because of the use of social media. If the policy dictates how your self storage employees should conduct themselves and there are consequences for non-compliance, then ensure that you are legally allowed to take adverse action.

· Distinguish between policies and tips for site usage – Keep the set of rules different from the guidelines about how to use each social media site. If some of your self storage workers are not as well versed in social media as others, you can host a workshop where you can bring everyone up to speed on how to use each social media site. The policy should outline how employees should conduct themselves when speaking as the representative of your self storage brand.

· Review and update regularly – Since social media changes so quickly, your policy should adhere to this general rule as well. When you first write the policy, try to keep it in general as much as possible. By doing so, you lessen the risk of the rules becoming outdated too often. For instance, Facebook recently changed its EdgeRank system. If a social media policy referred to it, then that would now be obsolete. Therefore, instead of naming specific items in the Terms of Service, your policy can simply refer that it should be followed in general.

Social media policies can help to encourage the responsible use of social media in your self storage business. However, keep in mind that social media should be used to create a creative and engaging conversation so implementing rules that are too stringent can hinder your goals.

How facility reviews and ratings can impact the future of your self storage business.

A communication crisis is always on the top of the lists of things that marketing professionals never want to encounter. Previously, in everyday marketing, whenever a crisis was at hand, a company would have a couple hours or maybe even a day or two to plan out a response. However, the immediacy of social media has put the customer in direct contact with businesses and responses are expected sometimes in a matter of minutes.

Most self storage facilities will never face any major scandal or blowup on social media or other but it is still wise to plan for any possible scenario that could end up affecting your sales. A plan should outline the relevant contacts and how they should be contacted when it comes to dealing with a public issue online.

You should always pay attention to what is being said about your brand online. Signing up for Google Alerts is a great way to keep your ear on the ground in the online community. You may choose to get alerts as soon as they become available or once a day, depending on your preference. Also sign up for alerts on your direct competitors so that you can be made aware of any recent developments they might make.

In the unfortunate event that a crisis arises, acknowledge it as quickly as possible. Speak the facts, as clearly and openly as possible and let your customers know that you have nothing to hide. In cases where someone at your self storage facility has made a mistake, own up to it and provide possible solutions. People will respect your brand more if they see you deal with situations like these and end up turning it into something positive.

Allow people to vent if necessary about the situation. You should of course monitor it but allow people to voice their opinions. If you always delete negative comments without addressing them, then your audience will be under the impression that your brand is not trustworthy. Show the public that you can handle criticism in a mature manner and this will help to build a loyal customer base. You can dedicate a section on your website for comments or just respond to people on your Facebook page or via Twitter. Also ensure that you keep your cool while responding to the negative criticism.

Negative criticism, if addressed promptly and in a cordial manner, can be turned into a powerful marketing tool. People will know you are human and as such mistakes are made, but handling it in a timely and positive fashion puts your company, and yourself, at the top, as a person that recognizes when something went wrong. Also, some people may try to vent in the heat of the moment without realizing that the mistake was in their part and when confronted with a positive remark and a willingness to address the issue it makes them take a step back and look at all the angles of the problem, most of the time they will end up apologizing to you. When you handled the issue and you showed respect and care, the customer will take that at heart and keep buying from you, and what is most important, he or she will keep recommending you, and that my friend is priceless.

If your self storage business has ever been faced with a crisis, then you will already know that it is a tasking experience. A crisis via social media is no different. All it takes is an ample amount of people sharing information for it to go viral. However, the last thing you want to do is to stay out of the public when handling a crisis. Be visible and transparent on social media in order to fix the issues. There is no formula for solving a social media crisis but taking the recommendations outlined above can help you to efficiently manage one.

Redecoration Tips 101

If moving is not in your future, maybe it’s time to redecorate. There are many things you can do to make a huge difference in your surroundings. The first thing you should think about is space. Having ample space to make changes, or creating space to get rid of the cluttered feeling in your home is key. If you find you have too many items and need to figure out what to do with them, try getting a self-storage unit until you can go through them and decide whether or not you’re donating your items or having a garage sale. Sometimes when you go back into a self-storage unit after a while, it’s like you’re in a store and you find things you can re-purpose.

Real Simple Magazine gives some tips from various home interior designers for redecorating that will stand the test of time. These may help you determine how to proceed. Of course, if you’re into modern furnishings or contemporary design, that will be covered in another post. Remember, changing the paint color in a room is always a good way to upgrade your space, or you may want to change your doors.

Let’s look at the tips:

  • Arrange small pictures on a dresser.

  • Stick to a muted palette.

  • Top carpeting with an area rug.

  • Keep the mantel spare.

  • Cluster similar colors together.

These are just a small sampling of tips that may work for you when figuring out your design scheme. Most importantly, you need to figure out your style. Is it eclectic? Country? Traditional? Once you’ve figured that out, you will be able to proceed a little bit better. Here are a few other tips to consider when redecorating:

  • Flooring – Do you want carpet, tile or wood floors? Light colored tile tends to open a room, and wood floors add elegant warmth.

  • Paint – do you want to make a statement, or are just looking for a change? Painting one wall in a beautiful color can make a huge difference in the aesthetic of a room. Group additional colors around that focal point.

  • Pictures – Pictures always add a certain flair to a room. You may want to put a cluster of photos together or have one large statement piece.

When redecorating, it’s easy to find little ways to spruce up the area positively. All it takes is a little thought and creativity. Your design should reflect your personality and have glimpses of who you are all over. Look through a couple of magazines for ideas. Another thing to consider is comfort. Many times, rooms are redone but end up stuffy. If you’re going to use the space, make sure it is functional and comfortable. There’s no use in buying furniture that you can’t use. It needs to look good and feel good as well. Do some research, clean out your space, get a self-storage unit for those items you no longer need, and get to work! Your new redecoration project is waiting for you!

Celebrities and Self Storage Units

Celebrities have a ton of stuff and need these items stored just like everyone else. While not every single instance of a celebrity using self storage will make a headline, there have been some pretty interesting incidents with them over the past few years. We’ve compiled a list of the funniest and strangest celebrity self storage interactions we could find. Take a look:

Free storage for Kanye and Kim – When the uber famous couple had its first child, a self storage provider offered an entire year of free storage to the musician and reality TV star. Explaining that new parents have a lot of stress to deal with, the company attempted to take some of it off their shoulders by offering a free place to store their extra belongings. There is no words whether or not the couple too the company up on its offer but they can always find lots of storage here with us at OMG!

Burt Reynold’ memorabilia – The iconic film star placed some of his most valuable belongings in self storage. These included items from the movie “Deliverance”, and a horse carriage built by Dolly Parton. There were so many items in the storage unit that the persons who bought it had to place the items in a museum in Florida.

Barry Switzer – This former coach of the Dallas Cowboys took the celebrity self storage trend to another level when he opened up his own business called Switzer’s Locker Room. Most celebrities rent a self storage unit and often times forget about it. Switzer took his business savvy and love for the industry and turned it into a rather impressive storage place for the people of Oklahoma.

Art Linkletter – Switzer is not the only celebrity who made a self storage business venture. A 90s TV and radio personality whose claim to fame House Party and Kids Say the Darndest Things , Linkletter started his own self storage business and had two locations in California until his death in 2010.

Paris Hilton’s abandoned unit – Adding to the list of celebrities with neglected self storage unit is the heiress, recording artist and former reality TV star. The auctioning of her unit produced a media frenzy with people paying $40 for a live stream just to be able to see the content. One lucky person ended up buying the unit for $2, 775. The unit contained Hilton’s diaries with detailed accounts of her various sexual encounters along with revealing photos – quite a juicy find. The person who bought the unit reportedly tried to sell the items for a whopping $10 million!

For the celebrities who are too busy to be bothered with remembering to pay monthly for a self storage unit, we suggest not storing personal items that could one day end up being revealed to the general public at an auction. Also, renting unit in the name of a manager or assistant is also great way to avoid the prying eyes of the paparazzi and media who will search high and low for a story involving someone famous.

How to Effectively Use Google Analytics for Mobile Reports

When using social media and the power of the internet, it’s important to know how to effectively use the tools. Google has repeatedly made changes to their algorithm and how they analyze data. With so many new trends and tools, especially as it relates to mobile media, knowing how to navigate and assess Google Analytics will be well worth the time.

When building your brand, having an effective website and mobile strategy is key. First, you should know what this report does. You will be able to break down your data according to type of device your visitor used for accessing your site, look at the revenue that has been generated (if applicable) and whether or not your site is being converted effectively. These reports can be so detailed that you can determine make, model and service provider of the device as well.

Being able to run these type reports is very beneficial. These reports allow you to identify patterns of web usage from your customers, which will in turn assist in building your brand. Let’s look at how to access these reports:

You will find the mobile analytics report under the Audience tab. From there, you will have two sections, which are Overview and Devices. Each one is specific in the information you can retrieve.

Overview contains the following reports:

  • Device Category, which breaks down whether or not your visitors used a desktop, mobile phone or tablet. This also includes analytics for Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, hand held games and e-readers.
  • Summary ABC, which gives you site usage, goals and ecommerce.
  • Pie charts which give you information on the responsiveness of your site, and also the revenue that may be coming in.

Devices contains the following reports:

  • Mobile Device Information Report. This gives you the name of the device and the model.
  • Comparisons with average use.
  • Mobile device branding.
  • Service Provider which shows in-depth data for your mobile visitors.
  • Mobile Input Selector, which shows how your mobile users navigate through the website. This is very detailed and highlights whether or not your users used a stylus, click wheel, touchscreen and more.
  • Operating System.
  • Screen Resolution. This is very helpful in knowing when and where to make adjustments to provide an optimal viewing experience for your customers.

Having an effective mobile device strategy for your brand is not only good business sense, but shows that your brand is worth doing the research. Being able to assess and analyze data to show where you need to revise or continue building your brand can help you stay on task and become a major force in your field. Every industry, including self-storage, can benefit from these reports, especially online aggregators. By incorporating the tools of choice (mobile technology) into your strategic plan, you open the doors for a variety of consumers that may not have been accessible before. While these reports will help you determine your consumer base, nothing is effective without a well planned strategy. Do your research, plan accordingly and watch your brand grow!

Top Reasons You Should Hire an Interior Decorator

As a homeowner, you may have purchased your home with the intention of making changes as you go along, or may be thinking about adding improvements to get the property ready for resale. No matter the reason, it may be a good idea to consult and hire an interior decorator to assist you with upgrades or staging.

While getting ready for your home remodeling project, you may want to clean out certain areas or move some items to a self-storage unit to have a blank canvas. Even if you’re contemplating the money that will be spent, it may be worth checking out. Here’s a couple of reasons for hiring an interior decorator:

  • It can help protect your investment – It's not a good thing to “wing it” when trying to upgrade your surroundings. If you have no clue about color blends or what marble is as opposed to travertine, you may want to get an expert in that knows how to match colors and textures to give you the effect you are looking for.
  • It can define and/or refine your style – You may not know what your style is and may be used to having a jumbled collection of a lot of different things. An experienced interior decorator can take your ideas and turn them into something wonderful or steer you in the right direction to hone your vision.
  • It can save you time – Using an interior decorator can give you an opportunity to do other things. You can oversee the project but you won’t have to do all the legwork that major remodeling projects usually need.
  • Interior decorators know and understand style and trends – they frequent design conferences and read design magazines to make sure you know what’s in, what’s coming, what’s timeless and what’s on the way out.
  • Interior decorators can help you plan a timeline and can stick to a design that will work within your budget – It’s always good to have a budget in which to work. An interior designer will know how best to allocate your funds to maximize your investment.
  • Interior designers have contacts. Lots of them. They work with reputable agencies and other experts to get things done. They have the inside track on a good contractor, etc.

You may have wanted to do a major remodel but realize this is not in your scope of work or a competency you have. Good interior designers go to school and join organizations that can help their careers. Taking the time to speak to a couple of designers can really be worth your time. Make sure you find reputable designers that have a portfolio of their work. You want to have a beautiful setting that was done in the least amount of time and within your budget. Let the experts capture your vision and bring it to life. You will be shocked and amazed at what can transpire as long as you have a budget. Ready, get set, go! Happy remodeling!

Man Buys Self Storage Unit With Dikembe Mutombo's Belongings

One Maryland man recently had a stroke of good fortune when he purchased a self storage facility filled with items that belonged to former NBA star Dikembe Mutombo. The storage unit belonged to the brother of the 7 ft 2 in former Houston Rocket’s player. Mutombo’s brother reportedly went back home to the Congo to deal with family matters and reneged on the payments for the unit.

If you’re wondering about the significance of this find, Mutombo has been heralded as one of the best basketball players in recent history. He is the star of a Geico commercial that has resulted in several Internet memes using the catch phrase ‘not in my house’. His career started in 1991 and he has played for six teams and won NBA Defensive Player of the Year four times and also participated in eight All Star games. Mutombo is also a humanitarian who has won the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 2001 and 2009.

Mutombo’s brother’s inability to keep current on the payments resulted in the unit being placed up for auction in order for the self storage facility to recoup the losses. Adrian Petrus was the lucky man who bought the unit for $300. The unit contained signed basketballs, trading cards, shoes, jerseys, and photos of the basketball player with other celebrities such as Michael Jackson and Nelson Mandela. There were also paintings signed by Mutombo’s brother.

Petrus told TMZ that he tried to reach out to Mutombo once he realized that the contents were his but he was unsuccessful. Therefore, he will be selling the items on eBay.

This recent find adds to the long list of celebrity self storage stories that have included the likes of Tila Tequila and Paris Hilton. You can try your luck with self storage auctions by visiting OMGStorage.com and searching for self storage facilities to inquire about when these auctions are held.
