When you think about the self storage industry, “cool” isn’t exactly what comes to mind. People normally rent self storage out of necessity and focus on factors such as price and convenience as opposed to the entertainment value of the self storage facility. However, one company in Chile is looking to change that.
Red Megacentro, which describes itself as an organization dedicated to providing warehouses and logistics, is planning to construct a multipurpose self storage facility in Miami. The company, which claims to have more than 75 years of experience in the self storage industry, will be entering the U.S. market by renovating an existing space. This property will be the first in the U.S. for the Chilean company.
The 185,000-square-foot facility will have office space, go-cart track, and furniture fixture showroom in addition to self storage space. According to Pablo Wichmann, CEO at Megacenter Business Parks the facility will be able to accommodate any small to medium size business with a mix of office, self storage units and out small bay “We offer flexibility for small tenants, with full services (unloading areas, temporary expansion possibilities,” Wichmann said.
The space was previously occupied by Regal Kitchen was purchased by Megacentro in January 2013. The developer planned to dedicate the space solely to self storage but plans changed when the opportunity arose to lease space to a go-kart company as well. In addition to self storage space and the go-kart company, the developer is also seeing small start-up companies to occupy what will be left of the space as well.
Red Megacentro certainly has a wealth of expertise in the property management field, which will be valuable for the success of this venture. It operated more than 7.5 million square feet in Chile and Peru and now has Miami on that list. The proposed idea is certainly unique and it will be interesting to see how it will fare in the upcoming years. Could this be the future of self storage? Only time will tell.
