Robbers Target Self Storage Facilities in California and Indiana

In the latest roundup of self storage related burglaries, we have break-ins in both California and Indiana. Police in Sausalito are looking for a masked man who made off with about $200 in cash after he tied up a mini storage center employee and robber the storage facility. The masked man allegedly forced the self storage manager onto the floor and bound his hands and feet and demanded his wallet before fleeing the scene.

Sausalito Mini Storage, which is a part of the All Over Marin Mini Storage group, is encouraging anyone with information to contact the Sausalito Police department. The suspect was described as a tall, white male in a blue jacket, blue jeans and blue baseball cap.

Police in Vanderburgh County fared a little better when they arrested two men accused of robbing a self storage facility on North Saint Joseph’s Avenue in California. The suspects, Job B. Schmitt and John E. Owen, are also accused of beating an Evansville man named James Sellers during the robbery. A third 14-year old suspect remains at large.

Sellers reportedly informed the police that three people attacked him and forced him onto the ground at the self storage facility. He was then choked and kicked during the altercation and threatened with a knife. The three attackers made off with an undisclosed sum of money while Sellers suffered from a head wound and other bruising from the attack.

Schmitt and Owen were taken into custody after warrants were issued for their arrests. The 14-year old suspect is expected to be apprehended soon. The two men are being held on $40, 000 and $10, 000 cash bond and are being charged with battery, robbery and theft.
