Self Storage Burglaries Mark Christmastime

Christmas is the time of year when we are all a little more kind and giving to our fellow man. People donate time, money and goods to those in need and the spirit of giving can be found all around us. However, there are a few people who seem to have been skipped over by the Spirit of Christmas and have decided to wreak havoc instead. There have been a string of self storage break-ins that have left a put a damper on the Christmas celebrations of a few families this year.

With Christmas only less than a week away, burglars stole Christmas gifts from Tarpon Self Storage in Port Isabel, Texas. The unit’s renter, Ida Martinez, said she got the unit so that she could have a safe place to put presents for her family before Christmas. While the unit had televisions, sofas and microwaves, the only things the thieves made off with were the Christmas presents. Martinez was especially distraught since several gift items were on layaway. Adding to the distress of the burglary , Martinez declined to purchase the insurance policy offered by the self storage facility, which would have reimbursed her for the stolen items.

In Riverside, California, police managed to arrest three persons who were suspected of breaking into several self storage units. One of them even tried to sell a stolen guitar on Craigslist. Furniture, musical instruments and appliances were stolen from units at Public Storage in late November. One of the victims found his guitar being advertised on Craigslist and alerted the police who then searched the houses of Alvaro Pereyra and Amber Burke where additional stolen property was discovered.

Police in Tampa were not as lucky and are instead offering up cash for information that can lead to the arrest of the person who burglarized a self storage unit just six days before Christmas. The Tampa Police department is offering a reward of $1, 000 to anyone who can provide information that can lead to the identification of the persons who was captured on a surveillance tape breaking into the Hillsborough Self Storage facility. Police report that the burglary occurred around 6:30 a.m. when two persons broke into several units in the facility.

When renting a self storage unit this holiday season, it is important to learn from the experience of those who have been victimized by these burglaries. A secure lock is sometimes not enough to guard against a self storage break-in. The fact of the matter is that thieves will find a way to get in one way or another. Therefore, always either buy insurance directly from the facility or get your own renter’s insurance that will have you covered in the event of a burglary or accidental damage.

The state of the self storage facility should be kept in mind when looking for a unit to rent. Look for things like surveillance cameras and whether or not the facility is well lit and has gated access. You should not only keep in mind the safety of your belongings but also your own personal safety when renting self storage during the holiday season.
