Bodies Found in the Storage Unit of Unlicensed Funeral Director

In a shocking twist to what was originally a larceny claim, twelve bodies were found inside a self storage facility in Massachusetts as police officers were investigating the former owner and operator of a funeral home. In addition to the twelve bodies, the remains of over 40 people were also found to have been cremated. The eerie contents belonged to Joseph O’Donnell a 55-year old man from who Boston rented the self storage unit in Weymouth.

The story gets stranger as it unfolds in that O’Donnell is an unlicensed mortician. He was accused and arrested in April for stealing more than $12, 000 from an elderly couple. O’Donnell is accused of taking pre-payments from the couple to cover two future funerals and then closing the funeral home. He failed to return the money and never carried out the services as promised.

This is not the only claim of theft against the former funeral home director. One woman in Randolf claims to have paid O’Donnell thousands of dollars to cremate three family members in 2011 and 2012. April Hopkins is gravely concerned as to whether or no the remains of her loved ones are indeed them. Hopkins was present at the Dorchester Municipal Court last Friday to try to get more information about the identities of the remains found inside the self storage unit.

He was being held on $10, 000 for grand larceny and could possibly face even more charges as this current investigation unfolds. At the moment, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley does not suspect foul play and said investigators are working on identifying the remains found inside the unit. No charges are being filed against O’Donnell at this time but there is still a pending criminal investigation. He has not held a current funeral license since 2008. While it is uncertain the nature of the charges that may be brought against O’Donnell, it is certainly a professional regulation violation to store bodies in self storage units.

Whatever the outcome, we sure hope that this disturbing trend of bodies found inside self storage units comes to an end, and soon.
